Dan Dunleavy Offically Joins MLSE, Alter Replaces Berger

Couple of quick hits, Congrats to Dan Dunleavy who I am told has finally inked his deal with MLSE to do play by play for both Toronto Maple Leafs radio games (40 something a season) and TFC soccer.

As a result of this Dunleavy will not be taking the reigns from Howard Berger on the Leafs beat, that role will be offically handled by David Alter.

Congrats to both.

It’s reins, not reigns.
Dunleavy is a dick but he’s good at what he does.

I’ll withold comment on Berger (you’re entitled to your opinion Dave, but I don’t share it – so “if you can’t say anything nice”…)

Dunleavy is not strong giving his opinions (they are awkward at best) – he is not a personality. His play by play is much stronger though – But he has a shrill voice and can make some really bush league commentary. I am wondering if he’s a good choice. I liked Dennis Beyak a lot.

…Brian is concise and to the point. He said what I took a whole paragraph to convey in a very short sentence.
Well said…

Another amature level hire by MLSE. Toronto sports fans have never had it worse. From the artocious Greg Brady now on the radio air waves in the morning to that bumbling god awful MLSE butt kisser Greg Millen doing color on Leafs games and now the bush league play by play call of Dan Dunleavy. This hire is a significant downgrade over Dennis Beyak. I can hardly wait to read who’s replacing the dopey Jim Ralph.

I can’t believe Dan Dunleavy is calling games for the bleeping Toronto Maple Leafs. Can you imagine someone of his caliber doing broadcasts for the Lakers, Yankees, Canadiens, etc.

As someone said, pure amateur hour.

I can’t listen to Dunleavy. Why wouldn’t they hire a real play-by-play man?

First off let me say that I am a huge Toronto Maple Leafs fan.

With regards to Howard Berger – I loved him on the FAN 590 airwaves. He pushed the Leaf management brass and players and it was a breath of fresh air.

This team has not won a stinkin’ Stanley Cup in 45 years now and counting. They never draft properly, never make sensible trades, give away picks like they are candy, etc. – and Leaf fans keep drinking the kool-aid we are served and keep pinning hopes on just making the playoffs. Forget about winning a Stanley Cup. Isn’t that the main objective of the Toronto Maple Leafs or any other National Hockey League franchise? This team seems to only sell the fact of getting into the playoffs.

Now with Howard Berger – he asked the hard nose questions to management whether it was Fletcher, Quinn, Dryden, Burke or Mike Smith. I know I would want to rip Leaf management’s head a part – if I had the chance and Berger got in there and asked questions on behalf of us.

Don Kollins is a bonehead because David Alter couldn’t carry Howard Berger’s jock-strap this fall when it comes to asking the hard tough questions to put this franchise on the hot seat.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have gotten a free ride for YEARS in this city – by media and fans and I for one am sick of defending this franchise..

I mean no wonder we Leaf fans get made fun of endlessly for supporting a losing franchise. This team is one of what maybe 4 or 5 other teams since 1967 who have never made the finals and most of the 4 or 5 are expansion teams after 1990.

Well said Darrell. I am not a Leafs fan, having grown up in Montreal, but do concur with you on how Berger asked the tough questions on the Leafs and certainly called it like it is without any of the PR spinning MLSE has perfected.

The way that Berger was treated, and the way that MLSE seems to conduct their business, it to manage the press themselves as best they can so the truth i.e. losing, which has been consistent for every one of their sports properties for way too long, is brushed aside, and the so called entertainment value is played up.

As a Raptors fan, my only true team that I really follow with any passion, I can only trust a handful of MSM’s to call it the way it is, i.e. Grange, Arthur, Koreen, Feschuk, but rely on the top Raptor blogs to really be frank without any of the niceties the MSM media still needs to maintain.

Darrell, couldn’t have said it better! Leaf fans offering serious and sober commentary on their team is a source of unending personal amusement. Blue and white disease is spreading like the Spanish Flu, even infecting burkie himself as he has confidently claimed that there’s only one roster spot to fight for at camp….and the fans actually parrot this as if it makes ANY sense for a 10th place team. The serious tone all issues Leafish is the greatest thing about the season. CAN’T WAIT to mock it!!!

This extra comment isn’t even related to sports media in Toronto – but since when does making the playoffs achieve greatness? How can a team with Leaf management brains only want to get into the playoffs where the other 29 teams – sure they want to make the playoffs too but they want to win that big, bright, shiny cup on Air Canada Center ice or the opposition of the Stanley Cup finals in mid June.

Howard Berger was awesome on the FAN and should totally be snapped up by TSN Radio.

Wow, big changes on the Leafs Scene this year.

First off, Howeard Berger gets the axe from the Fan590 as the beat reporter. Replaced by Dunleavy then Alter. Gone will be Berger’s insight and ability/willingness to ask the tough questions. Replaced by a neophyte who will work cheap and accept things as they are presented

Secondly we have Jonas Siegal covering the Leafs for TSN 1050. How did that happen? He sounds like he just came from college radio. How did he get this job? In Toronto? Covering the Leafs? Daddy?

Finally we have Dan Dunleavy as the high profile play by play man for the Leafs and TFC. There is a reason he read scores on the Fan for 15 years. He is not talented. No personality. No range. No emotion. Weak, no distinct voice. Why wasn’t the talented Dennis Bayek given the job? Now he is gone back to Winnipeg and we are stuck with Dan.

It is tough enough being a Leafs fan. These moves just made it harder.

The only other pre-1991 team to never make the finals is the Jets/Coyotes (not counting the defunct Seals/Barons franchise).

Dunleavy???? Think about this….Dan Dunleavy sitting in Foster Hewitt’s seat. Look at how far down the Leafs have fallen. Very sad.

Only in Toronto would you have people chirp a story about local media. Congrats to both on the career promotion.

For the guys talking shit about these two gentlemen climbing the ladder, if/when you ever get promoted at your jobs, I hope people tell you how terrible you are and don’t deserve it.

Real classy….
