No mention at all about the fact that Jeff Sammut is moving to early evening (7 PM to 11 PM)? Personally I don’t like this move. In case you have not heard – Sammut will be moving to early evenings starting this Monday and Norm Rumack will be doing the overnight shifts.

I know some of you don’t like Sammut, but 7 days overnight now of Stormin’ Norman Rumack???? Really???? Stupid decision once again by the Rogers empire.

October 26, 2011 10:53 am

Norm is light years a better host than VIto from Woodbridge.

Vito shouldn’t be hosting on air at any time he’s that bad!

I don’t listen to sports radio between 7-10pm but if i can’t sleep through the night i’m glad Norm is on air again overnight.

It’s very simple Norm is a pro Vito is a hack.

So letting the late night vampire do overnights is a good move but letting Vito on air at any time sucks.

Man the fan is a disaster they need to clean house starting with Kollins. TSN is by far the better radio network they keep improving, while the fan keeps getting worse

congrats to Sammut for the promotion, but something here isn’t adding up:

1. why would you fire Norm then bring him back part-time, then promote him to full time.
2. that was a really short-lived stint at overnight for Sammut. I’m skeptical that he wowed anyone and forced their hand in that short time
3. why doesn’t the FAN just go with FOX Sports or SportingNews overnight.

October 26, 2011 11:36 am

I am not a Rumack fan but this just doesn’t make any sense? Why have Sammut on overnights Monday thru Friday only to have a guy who was fired a couple of years ago come back and have him on every night overnight?

The guy who has to go is Don Kollins! He should be applauded as being the guy to single handedly destroy a sports radio station!

TSN is by far the better radio network they keep improving, while the fan keeps getting worse

And just how do you quantify that?

Whenever I think of Rumack the first two memories pop into my head is that stupid “Hammerhead Alert” thing he would always do – if heaven forbid someone disagrees with him.

Another memory of him was his love affair with Wendel Clark (he wouldn’t trade Sergei Fedorov for Wendel Clark – remember that fiasco?) and the Toronto Maple Leafs being God’s team in the National Hockey League.

Now he has a lust for the Buffalo Sabres and Darcey Reiger?!

A couple of observations from a long drive home this morning:
Mike Grange must feel like a red-headed freckled face stepson with a limp..He comes to 590 to co-host pts then gets shafted to be a co-host with bbblair (a guy whom criticizes everybody and everything yet can’t get a full sentence out of his mouth without studdering and not saying full words )Heard the lineup of guests and to be honest sounded interesting but after 15 minutes of being torched and my coffee cup not being full of Javex I decided to hit tsn/1050..
Wow what a difference !!!!!!!! Patrick so professional whom entertains on radio, sure nothing local ,but darn good radio.
It’s was really a shame cause I wanted to listen to Grange but he is now caught in a no win dead end spot with an inept host.
Hopefully TSM will let us all know when Robbers wakes up and throws bbblair overboard.

The Fan moves its overnight guy to evenings and you guys call it a disaster, a stupid decision by the Rogers empire, and say that Kollins needs to be fired.

Mike in Boston – I know The Fan tried Foxsports radio when it lost ESPN a couple years ago. I recall Nelson Millman saying they dropped it after a week because of too many listener complaints.

I’d imagine they’re putting Sammut in evenings because with the NBA lockout, and MLB about to be in offseason, there won’t be any programming in the evening slot for a while. Sammut tweeted that he might be back in overnights once baseball comes back.

Good point Daniel – I was just about to write that this move seems to be caused in response to the NBA lockout, since 590 now has 82 slots to fill, most of which take place in the evenings.

As for the negative comments, I do notice that a number of names on this thread tend to consistently write negative comments about 590, so I would just like to say: consider the source.

I could be wrong but I think when Rumack was originally let go by 590 it was before Kollins took over so in this particular case I’m not sure anyone can accuse him of flip-flopping………………..I am not a big fan of either Sammut or Rumack but I almost never listen to 590 from 7:00 PM until 6:00 AM so these moves won’t have much impact on me

thanks — that makes a lot of sense. I’m still a little surprised they would give Sammut the evening slot, rather than trying to shift E.Smith or someone with a bit more experience. it seems like a total ratings concession to TSN1050.

i have nothing further to add to this discussion but since there is no game 6 tonight i just wasted 5 minutes bouncing around the old bikini of the day posts & comments, and came across a couple of classics from days gone by:

October 26, 2011 8:26 pm

@ Daniel – how is moving the late night overnight guy (that you have in that role for a grand total of 6 months) and move to early evening a smart business decision? Either Jeff Sammut couldn’t handle the graveyard shift every night or that dufus Kollins is waiving his finger around as an authority figure?

October 26, 2011 9:51 pm

To people who are asking, moving the overnight guy to evenings is pretty much standard operating procedure for radio. It’s whats supposed to happen. The new guy starts in the latest shift and either he proves himself or circumstances dictate that he move up. A guy like rumack that stays in overnight and seems to thrive there is the exception

October 26, 2011 9:56 pm

this site’s comment section is getting tiresome dont you think? It is essentially bitching, whining, and calling for the fan 590’s downfall except it never happens. Personally i believe there are good and bad parts to both stations content, and i love the ability yo have choice in the marketplace but enough with the fan 590 downfall whining on a daily basis. The sun rises in the east, the leafs wont make the playoffs, and the fan will continue to dominate this city’s sports radio landscape despite the “evolution” of sports radio taking place here as well

October 27, 2011 12:19 pm

That’s what the overnight shift is for, dude. You put your young guys there to develop and then move them up the food chain when you think they’re ready. Nobody does overnights as a career.

October 27, 2011 5:01 pm

Yeah – as others wrote – there’s not really anything obviously negative or positive about moving an overnight guy to evenings. Frankly – it’s pretty normal, and not really notable in any way. (Neither slot is extremely important for radio – especially overnights, obviously).

They probably just moved him because there’s a gap in evenings now with the NBA lockout. I totally get if he’s not your cup of tea or you think he might struggle…..but it’s a bit silly when on here react like every move The Fan makes is somehow evidence of a disaster, more proof that Kollins/Peley/Moore etc need to be fired, or some damning evidence against ‘Robbers’.

This is pretty minor.

Would love your thoughts, please comment.x
