The Blue Jays/Rogers and their on air cheerleaders at 590 can hype all they want but the fact is this: very few people care about the Jays. The attendance and viewership numbers are abysmal. Changing the logo won’t change that.

Nice production, fromage content. I’m getting to the point of “wake me up when they sign some free agents”. “Next year… we talkin’ about next year????…. Next year…”

Roger, I care about the team.

I am impressed with management and how they go about their business, how they have a plan, a consistent message, are honest with their fans and don’t treat the media and fans like their idiots (Can you say the same about the Leaf’s and their management?). Maybe management and the coaching staff doesn’t answer every question asked of them, but at least they don’t attack the person asking the question and they provide a reason for not answering the question.

I like the players, I like how they play the game and I enjoy going to the Dome.

And I challenge your statement that viewership is abysmal. Every time I read about the TV ratings they appear to be quite healthy.

If the Blue Jays don’t make the post season next year, fine, I can live with that. I’ve never heard management ever make a guarantee as to when they would make the post season. They only promise to keep looking to improve the team with the goal to be competitive every year.

This change in the logo and branding is a step in the right direction and I applaud them for it.

Hey Derrick,

How does Pelley like his coffee (or some other euphemism suggesting you’re his house boy)? Changing the logo is re-arraigning the deck chairs on the Titanic. I give Rogers 2 maybe 3 years before they dump this dog.

If you’re going to run your mouth, at least be within shouting distance of some facts. The Jays local/national TV ratings are very good.

Roger,

Your personal insult/attack/rhetorical question is uncalled for. Use facts to back up your argument.

I don’t know how me professing to like the Blue Jays (and providing my reasons for liking them) makes me the house boy for Mr. Pelley. Does every fan who expresses their admiration for a team become the “house boy”?

Also, please explain how the Blue Jays are like the “Titanic”? What evidence do you have which may suggest that Roger’s will sell the team? As a fan, I am interested in such things.

Derrick – my bad, my insult was uncalled for. Anyway, to me its obvious Rogers will unload the Jays. From the first year as owners, the team, has lost millions every year.

Overall Rogers is doing fairly well but like all large conglomerates, they will unload assets that are losing money. Using 590 and Sportsnet, they will continue to promote the hell out of the team but alas, the team will continue to flounder on the field and at the box office and there will come a time when Rogers will say enough is enough.

At his stage all Rogers is doing is praying for a better on field product which will increase ticket sales – which of course will garner them a higher price for the team.

Roger,

I don’t know if the Roger’s has lost money every, but I don’t know if they’ve made money either. You could be right.

As for the logo and uniform, glad they went back to the retro stuff.

I’m not hating it as much as you guys. It is nice. But I does remind me a bit of what Mackowycz said about the Jays (and their mouth peices) liking to distract people on how exciting guys like Adam Lowen to not talk about how poor a season they had (well poorer than previous season)

“viewership numbers are abysmal. ”

Nope. You’re making that up to try to prove a point.

A sportsnet press release from about a month ago. Took me about 20 seconds to google:

“Toronto Blue Jays audiences reached new heights this season on Rogers Sportsnet with an average television audience of 507,000 (2+)*, the network’s highest-season average ever.

Jays on Sportsnet audiences were up 17 per cent compared to the 2010 average of 437,000 viewers. The 2011 season opener is the biggest Jays audience in the network’s history as 976,000 (2+) tuned in for the Jays’ 13-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins. In addition, Sportsnet’s biggest audience this season for a West-Coast start (10 p.m. ET) was 527,000 (2+) as viewers tuned in for Canadian Brett Lawrie’s first game played just outside his native Vancouver, against the Seattle Mariners on Aug. 15.

According to BBM Canada, through the end of the 2011 season, Sportsnet attracted an average audience of 100,000 in Adults 18-34, compared to an average of 86,000 over the same period last year, while Men 18-34 averaged 64,000 viewers, compared to 55,000 last year.

Sportsnet’s top five Blue Jays audiences for the 2011 season are as follows:

Friday, April 1 – Minnesota @ Toronto (976,000)
Friday, Sept. 2 – Toronto @ New York Yankees (742,000)
Saturday, Aug. 6 – Toronto @ Baltimore (730,000)
Sunday, April 3 – Minnesota @ Toronto (729,000)
Monday, May 16 – Toronto @ Detroit (723,000)”

Excellent, excellent numbers. Especially considering they play 162 times a year.

“very few people care about the Jays.”

Attendance – legitimately bad. Yes. Personally I think it’s understandable considering there hasn’t been a really meaningful game played here in 18 years.

People care about the Jays though. The TV ratings, the chatter on the internet, radio, TV, out and about. I think it’s a pretty common consensus that they’re a solid #2 in the city, well behind the Leafs.

As for the logo (instead of responding to troll bait)..

Think it’s awesome. The black and graphite ones were really terrible. Will be cool to see them in Blue and White again.

“Anyway, to me its obvious Rogers will unload the Jays. From the first year as owners, the team, has lost millions every year. ”

Everything Rogers has done in the past 2 years points to the contrary. And I doubt Rogers lost money last year.

Derrick – I try to be really diplomatic on here, and it’s nice that you’re trying to do that, but I wouldn’t bother with Roger. He’s essentially a troll.

There’s no reason to think Rogers will sell the Blue Jays at this point. It’s free, highly rated content for their cable sports network, their all sports radio network, their digital sports channel, and a tenant for their downtown sports stadium. Rogers is investing MORE in sports/sports programming if anything.

(If you’re curious how valuable highly rated sports programming is worth, check out what the Rangers are getting in their recent cable TV deal. Billions.)

There was some speculation that Rogers might look to sell when Ted Rogers died, but that passed after a few months.

Don’t know how much the team makes/loses, but according to McCown, their books are better now than they have been in years. Beeston stopped give aways/comps etc. That was also a contributor to the drop in attendance (Godfrey counted comps in attendance totals).

The Jays have plenty of challenges and issues. But there’s nothing dire. If they make themselves into a contender, I would imagine it wouldn’t take long for the team to go from ‘have not’ to ‘have’ status.

The new old-style logo is great as well as the uniforms. A very solid and positive make over.

Now if the team can be as good of an upgrade then there will be winner in TO soon.

Sorry that the haters of Blue Jays such as Roger, don’t have much of eye for design and find (or make up) negative in something positive for the team. Glad that the Jays have very capable Canadians running the show in terms of Beeston and Anthopolis.

I gave up on baseball and the greedy players in disgust after the strike.

But the summer was so hot i was indoor’s much of the time in air conditioning and started watching the Jays games again!

I love baseball again…the Jays are as bad as the Maple Laughs and i hate Robbers so it’s all good cheering for the other teams!!

I’m v happy that they went back to the Friendly Jay 😀 And made the uniforms BLUE again and we aren’t heading towards just renaming the team to “The Jays” like was rumoured to be during the JP era and having the black and gun metal outfits >_> The Jays aesthetics in the JP era were like the Michael Bay Transformers designs…

I smell something? Do you guys smell something?

Anyway, I like the unis, and I feel good about the team. Young players with plenty of upside.

Now where is the Lysol?
