Bruce has a follow up to TSM’s story (uncredited, of course) about PPM sample sizes. He includes a quote from someone in the industry:

“Sample sizes have always concerned people who aren’t involved in the research,” says Debra McLaughlin, CBC’s senior director of research. “BBM has rigorous methods to test sample sizes. We’re confident they’re getting numbers right within the methodology. Week after week, the consistency of the numbers they come up with gives you a great deal of confidence about the numbers.”

this doesn’t pass the sniff test. the consistency of the numbers just speaks to the consistency of the listening habits of the people surveyed. this does nothing to address the sample size issue. i’m not going to tell Bruce how to do his job — i’ll leave that to renowned journalism expert Brian Burke — but he really should have commented on that quote in his article. As his article reads, one has no real sense about whether the current ratings system is adequate or not.

Over the weekend (or could have been Tuesday game) an elderly man called up Leafs talk with Andy Frost and he was giving these references from centuries gone by including suggesting Gardiner play forward because some dude (Red Kelly?) from half a century did. The normally calm Frost freaked out and said “Come on! this isn’t the 1960s, things are different now, he is not playing forward, PLEASE!”. (funny note, same elder was on Fan Leafs post game show just half an hour later with same suggestion, they were a bit friendlier lol)

Well yesterda Gardiner played some forward, I wish I was able to listen to Frost and hear if anybody brought that up. So did Frost rant about how Wilson is out of touch to do this like he did that caller? I would guess not.

Would love your thoughts, please comment.x
