A Lot To Be Thankful For

by TSM

It’s funny you know, I started this blog almost four years ago as a way to vent my frustrations over the quality of sports media coverage in Toronto. Over the years I have used this as a forum to share certain elements of my life, some personal, some public; places I travel to, places I like to eat. As much as it is my place, it really has become as much yours, those who read it regularly, who take the time to write, BMM, text or direct tweet me and of course those who comment on a regular basis. Recently I have taken great pride in that the comments section has taken on a life of it’s own, talking about topics I haven’t raised, calling attention to that which I haven’t noticed. In large part it’s as much yours as it is mine. That’s cool.

This site is much like sports is to me in many ways, an escape from the daily toll of life in the year 2011. Too often, I, like many of you, am confronted with tragic stories in our every day life that too be honest i need to hide from if just for a few minutes. It is in large part why I write every night before going to bed. It’s a great distraction.

There is no hidden agenda to this post, but rather at a time when certain life events have hit closer to home and had lingering effects i thought it time to take stock and pause. Of course, both Canadian and American Thanksgiving have passed so I am, as is often the case a day late and a dollar short.

So, without further ramblings, here are a few things that yours truly is thankful for while curating this website (in no specific order), I apologize for anything or one that I have forgotten:

To the fine folks at the media outlets who send us their daily lineups
To those of you out there who reach out with rumblings, news, rumors or innuendo in the world of sports media or the business of sports
To Doug Maclean for always mentioning his fortunes in nearly ever topic on air
To Nick Kypreos for his epic public tweets that weren’t meant to be public and calling it like it is
To Brady and Lang for returning the fun to a morning sports radio station
To Jeff Blair for extending his newspaper voice to the airwaves
To Eric Smith for every email that I get from, each more well thought out than the last
To Bob McCown for wearing being the best damn interviewer in Toronto period
To Bruce Arthur for tweets that make me say huh
To Dave Perkins for the blanket comment
To Michael Grange, Paul Jones, David Naylor, Ryan Wolstat, Kevin Mcgran, James Mirtle, Sean Fitz-Gerald and so many more who constantly respond, challenge and comment on twitter, email or elsewhere
To Elliotte Friedman for the one of the best online weekly hockey columns to read
To Puck Daddy for reminding me each and every day that hockey is just a sport
To Damien Cox for keeping Tennis on the front page of sports, and twitter hilarity
To Steve Simmons for making most Sunday’s a worthwhile Sunday
To Larry Brooks for making me laugh, almost every Sunday
To Rick Westhead for coming back
To Don Kollins and Rob Gray, two nice guys doing great jobs that will never be appreciated
To Armstrong and Devlin for getting us through Raptors games and seasons
To all the Leaf bloggers out there who fill my extra reading hours with quality material I can’t get elsewhere
To the fine folks at PPP and DGB for all that you do
To the various hosts on TSN and Sportsnet who constantly remind me that sports is best consumed as a visual art
To those who record radio ratings for making the process of reporting ratings so impossible
To Mckenzie and Dreger for being the best at what they do
To Richard Griffin and Bob Elliott for reminding me why I am a blue jays fan
To the countless “beat guys” for asking the questions you have to ask, and the nasty looks you get in response
To Stephen Brunt for the stories he tells
To Bryan Hayes for making me laugh, each and every show
To Cybulski and co for being the best alternate each and every day
To Andrew Krystal for what say you
To Stellick and Berger for being the leafs fans that you both truly are
To the Maple Press folks for the best annual leafs magazine
To John Shannon for the best sports media analysis in the business
To Nelson Millman for being one of the first to respond, and always doing so
To John Derringer for the best non morning sports alternative radio
To the Village Bike, wherever you are
To Bill Watters, wherever you are
To Jonas Siegel for having a name so damn close to mine
To many of the above, and many who I have failed to mention for giving me enough material to write 3,432 posts about!
To those who I’ve forgotten for forgiving me
To those who help, who I won’t mention 🙂

Most importantly to each of you who stops by from time to time, and to those who humor me on a regular basis by reading, posting, responding, suggesting, asking, and just checking in and especially to those who self police the comments.

Thanks TSM and all your staff/volunteers for giving us this great forum. We may not all agree, but we seem to all agree in venting here at this site.

Cheers and continued success.

“To John Shannon for the best sports media analysis in the business”

I know you are going out of your way to look at the positives in all concerned, but I have to echo Mike (In Boston) that you were obviously under the influence of something when you wrote this.

Re: John Shannon remark:

You’re either gargling with bourbon or using an inhaler. Maybe both?

Thanks for starting – and maintaining – this site.

I actually really miss Bill Watters. It’s not the same without him. He’s way better than Mcsorely or May, so someone please get him back on the Sportsnet panel. Please.

To play devil’s advocate a bit, Shannon is at least good at talking about the television side of sports media specifically, along with Hiestand.

Also, big up TSM on consistently updating the site and giving people like myself and the other members of the commentariat a place to gripe and complain and praise and all of the things that we are wont to do.

Glad I wasn’t the only cynical person looking through that list and wonder which is genuine and which were sarcastic lol

I agree with JUSTORBS about McSorley and May………..I really don’t know why Sportsnet thinks that they are good hockey analysts

My thanks go out to this site for keeping me informed about what is going on in the Toronto Media, because I don’t listen much anymore. I use to listen mornings until they gassed Hogan, but now, I only tune in to PTS , but only on and off depending on the topic. I tried TSN , and I like their presentation and people (except Simmons), but every time I switch over they are talking bloody hockey.
My real thanks go out to XM Radio, because I can listen to what ever. I am my own program director. Best 42 cents I spend each day.
