Oh How It Gets Quiet When The Maple Leafs Win

Over the last couple of days I’ve been listening to podcasts of radio shows, I’ve been reading papers, all that I’ve really been missing are tv highlight shows, sorry TSN/Sportsnet/Score. You know what’s funny? How the level of interesting reporting drops off whenever the Toronto Maple Leafs go on any kind of “run”. The Leafs who have now put together a mini streak have completely neutered the sports reporting world. I’ve listened to countless segments, morning shows, drive home shows, PTS even, one big yawn. Hockey central at noon— has anyone heard anything the least bit interesting, let aloe compelling over the last couple of weeks? Print? forget about it.

Perhaps it was a coincidence, but since Burke’s Colton Orr episode, it’s like the Sports MSM has been lulled to sleep. Jays, Raptors, NFL coverage (save for Dan Patrick) have been total bores. Forget Toronto equals loserville, how about boretown. Let’s go back to just before the holiday break, the Leafs were in a bit of a spin, they were actually of the playoffs, Wilson got his extension announced. Going back a litter further there was the Jays not winning the bid for the Japanese player. The NBA lockout ended. It’s like the MSM has been on auto pilot since the TSN/Rogers deal for MLSE.

You know how quiet it’s been, Dick Peddie retired and there’s been no parade! Seriously, the most loathed man in Toronto Sports since Ballard himself is gone and there’s a couple of small clips here or there. It’s no wonder blogs are kicking it these days. A puff piece in the Star about him counting his shekels down in SoFla is really it. I mean, really, shouldn’t someone have put Watters on to review the illustrious career of Richard Peddie, President of MLSE? How about we get Peddie and Watters on the same set of OTR. How great would that be?????

I don’t know about you, but as someone who consumes a lot of MSM sports content, I’m pretty bored with the current offerings. Is it really because the Leafs are winning? Yeesh, almost liked it more when they were losing then!
