B&L this morning interviewing Sam Mitchell:

Lang: Paul Pierce passed Larry Bird on the Celtics’ all-time scoring list, but can you really say that Pierce was better than Bird?

Brady (combo whiny / exasperated): NOBODY’S SAYING THAT!

lol.

Tomorrow, Feb.09, 2012, marks the return of Mike Weir to the world of golf.
He tees it up at Pebble Beach.
I, for one, am pumped about this! In reality, this is basically Mike’s last hope. He needs to make a ton of money in the tournaments he is in, just to keep his PGA card.

Let’s go WEIRSY!!!

Sorry i have heard people say that before. What exactly is a straw man argument? What is the example here?

Sam Mitchell has been very entertaining with Brady & Lang, compared to how it was when he coached the odd time I heard him with Stellick & Landry. It was pretty obvious neither of those guys had any NBA knowledge and barely tried to, and they certainly weren’t watching any non-Raptors NBA games.

You might think, “well neither am I right now” and that’s fine, but then your job might not dictate that you check out what’s happening around the rest of the league”.

Saying that, as much as Brady tries to keep himself in check when Lang drops some ridiculous statement, I’d have blown up at that one myself. Lang, and I really believe this, is a dreadful interviewer, and the banter is fine, his opinions are sometimes passable, but his questions are absolutely cringeworthy.

I recall him asking Eric Francis if the Leafs were going to trade for Ryan Miller while the Sabres were struggling and during the same discussion, he asked if Buffalo would be buyers soon to get themselves back in the playoff hunt. Which is it? He’s just not good. The Pierce v. Bird question would suggest there’s actually a human being that believes “B” instead of “A”. Crazy.

straw-men are easy to knock down.

it’s a form of disingenuous argument, because you don’t actually engage with what your opponent is saying. you basically characterize your opponent as arguing for a very weak (and therefore easy to refute) argument.

also, google is a handy resource for such questions.

Thanks mike. Yes i know of google..i was more focused on what the example was here as several arguments arose. Bruce arthur calls jmany things strawman arguements and i am yet to see solid example that brings on aha moment for me.

found an example of a straw man argument while glancing at the Twitter box:

“love when people’s support for fighting in hockey is the crowd reaction. “They love it.” They’d love if someone got hung too”

i suppose you could make the case this is ad hominem too ….
