The evening shows don’t get a lot of run here. driving through Toronto this evening, caught some shows i don’t usually listen to. a few thoughts:

– Sammut is decent. I spent a few segments with him and he’s definitely not a threat to steal any daytime slots, but compared to the Roj or the Deacon, he’s fine. One thing though: it’s sufficient to tease a guest for the next hour once. spending half of each segment talking about the details of the upcoming guests is tedious for the listener.

– Tati and Hogan demonstrate the (hidden) value of professional training and experience when it comes to carrying a radio show. Compared to guys with little formal radio training or experience (Blair/Shannon/Cballs/etc) it was a breath of fresh air to listen to Tati and Hogan converse. Smooth cadence, few pregnant pauses, no talking over each other … good stuff.

One small criticism: listening to Hogan reminded me of something that grated when he was on 590. The guy has the loudest laugh of anyone on radio and he’s not shy about using it.

Content-wise, Hogan had a bit of dud segment when i tuned in. The topic was a casino for Toronto, and he claimed that it would increase crime. When reasonably pressed by Tati why a legal casino would increase crime he dimly stated that he’s read “lots of studies” that state that crime follows casinos, and then stated that “cars would be broken into”, and there would be drugs and prostitution.

If you’re going to come on radio and make this argument then at least have some facts or citations rather than vague unsubstantiated references to studies that may or may not exist. Maybe this is too high a bar for evening radio …

It was an uplifting day for Toronto sports radio today…………….Brunt was co-host on Blair’s show on 590 for all three hours this morning……………Shulman was in studio with Hayes for 30 minutes on 1050 at 1:30……………and Arthur was there for his semi-usual three hour Monday stint on Cybulski’s show…………..anytime you can get extended time with Brunt, Shulman, and Arthur it’s a good day for the listeners

On Saturday I heard Don Landry on Tatti’s show on 1050 as a guest…………….apparently he was covering the Brier on behalf of Yahoo Sports……………….it looks like Landry even has his own website now, or maybe he always did and I never knew about it

Im surprised bob did not have on a guest to discuss the olg casino thing. He could do 3 hours on it.

I wonder if the guy from olg was on 1050 is that he runs (i think) the post and arthur was on today. He did call bruce the best columnist in canada, which is prob true, since brunt no longer qualifies.

@Alex I’m shocked too. Maybe they just had other things they wanted him to talk about yesterday. I know that if allowed, Bob would be talking about this CONSTANTLY. Also, maybe they thought it was off topic? Usually his gambling discussions are about horse racing or online poker, but talking straight up “casino” might not be something the FAN feels is really on topic?

Mind you, TSN talked about it…

Would love your thoughts, please comment.x
