It was great segment, Campbell & Zaun thumbs up.

I could write a 10,000 word essay on why I can’t stand Damien Cox. But, who has the time? And honestly, he just doesn’t matter that much.

April 2, 2012 5:52 pm

As I said before, Zaun is the best analyst around.

Other than his opinion of Burke and his performance, I enjoy Damien Cox. He consistently takes an opposite view point from Bob or will play devil’s advocate on an issue. I don’t always agree with him, but it makes for interesting radio and conversation with Bob and his guests.

I still cannot the kids at sports net..
Gas tabler move either Zaun or Ashby to TV with Buck
Or Ashby to TV & Zaun to radio..
Both are great talents and they are going to lose one or both to the US !

That’s one of the problems I have with him, Derrick. He’s a contrarian, but just because it gets him attention. Not that I don’t mind different points of view (I appreciate them if backed up intelligently). The thing about Cox is that he doesn’t usually back his “opposite” view points up with much of anything. Case in point, Cox wrote an inflamatory article a couple seasons ago which all but accused Jose Bautista of using PEDs. “Just gotta ask…” was his premise. But, he had absolutely NOTHING to back up his “musings”. It was nothing other than a cheap attention-getting stunt. (Never mind the damage it did to Bautista’s reputation.) And it worked. While widely condemned for that article, it got Cox a lot of attention and ultimately helped him to get back on PTS. (Notice how he is NEVER critical of Bautista or the Blue Jays now that Rogers signs his checks.)

That’s just one of many examples. I also find it ironic that the world’s biggest contrarian never listens to or respects opposite view points from others. Like Shannon, he’ll often shout down smart people like Friedman because he simply believes he’s right and they’re not. (Or maybe he feels threatened by them, who knows…) I could go on, but that’s more than I wanted to say about someone who doesn’t deserve the attention he craves.

Curt – The ‘you gotta ask the question’ thing was ridiculous.

One of the Blue Jay blogs did a great take on that by accusing Cox of plagiarizing in his articles. They had no evidence whatsoever, but, hey you gotta ask the question..

Meanwhile over on 1050 there was an enjoyable hour today from 6:00 to 7:00 with Arthur and Shulman in studio……………they are both great to listen to……………….my dream roundtable would probably be McCown, Brunt, Arthur, and Shulman (with Friedman as an alternate)

What I want is to hear people argue positions they believe in, not just ones that are contrary to what other people say, especially not if your goal is just to agitate. Anybody can do that. Hell, I can do that.

Dion Phaneuf is a bad captain? No he’s not, he has a hot girlfriend! Well you didn’t say HOCKEY captain! I still don’t see where you said HOCKEY. SHOW ME WHERE YOU SPECIFICALLY SAID THIS WAS ABOUT HOCKEY. Just because you’re talking about the NHL doesn’t necessarily mean you were referring to his hockey ability. Well, at least he’s better than if Nazim Kadri’s the captain! So what if he wore a Red Bull hat? Would you prefer if he wore a “Ashley Madison” hat? Are you saying that you think cheating on your spouse is better than drinking energy drinks!? You’re not SERIOUSLY advocating that are you? That’s it I’m blocking you on Twitter.

The Toronto Star should pay me. >_>

I enjoy when Brunt and Bob argue because I know that to some degree both believe their positions (even if they are exaggerating their passion for the issue to be good radio) and have given some thought to the subject and have reasons for their opinions. I don’t enjoy “I’m just gonna say this to be an ass because we always need somebody to be an ass.”

Besides, you can annoy people and still be genuine. I do it every day 😀

Can’t move Zaun to radio because he can’t carry a broadcast. His lack of play-by-play capabilities would make for a long season for Jerry Howarth or anyone else partnered with him. (That’s the reason he isn’t doing radio this season when Ashby fills in on TV.) Zaun’s best suited to TV…and probably best suited to studio analysis. Sportsnet might still lose him to the U.S. but only to another studio show.

Cox obviously matters a ton to you guys if you instantly turn it off when he is on. He is well spoken funny and has good banter with bob.

I don’t get this whole having to agree with someone to listen to them. I respect everyones opinions and listen for entertainment, not for validation of my views.

Pts for me is better than anything else by far, prey have best guests and i enjoy the banter. I don’t always agree with Shannon or cox but even at their stupidest I can’t imagine becoming so livid over listening.

How people are so crazy about sports media that they rage daIly about certain people they disagree with is beyond me. I mean seriously, grow up and just don’t listen. Do you need to tell us every day how you “dont listen”?

Note: this is obviously false anyway. Either you aren’t listening and therefore are commenting ignorantly on the quality, or are lying and continue to listen and bitch. Latter most likely, making you a lying hypocritical childish fool.

Also, devils advocate seems to be difficult to understand. If I’m playing the DA, then I am purposefully arguing against the obvious, common, mainstream, or whatever view for the sake of discussion.

How the hell do you criticize him for not fully developing arguments or making perfect points when he is intentionally and explicitly playing the DA? It’s for entertainment and to provide a response to bobs (for example) points. In cases
Like this he actually AGREES with bob, that’s where “playing” the DA comes in.

I guess I understand passion about media…that’s why we are all here right. But really you don’t need to make daily diatribes against the same person. Choose maturity – not listening and moving on with life – …not whining like a child that everything and everyone should change to suit your personal views.

Especially when certain commenters have brought so much vitriol and hatred here, even towards other commentators who disagree about people like cox.

This blog was and should remain a civil, respectful, and semi intellectual place of discussion.

James- Good points, Cox is serving two masters. Rogers and Torstar. I’m still not sure of journalistic integrity, from him and others that have gravitated to radio and t.v. He has been point man for Burke lately in the press, kind of disturbing. Radio side, he wants to be entertaining thats good for the listeners. Having said that, he does drive me nuts but i still listen and read his articles.

April 5, 2012 7:13 pm

I don’t know what you’re going on about, James. But, speaking for myself, I don’t read/listen to Cox. I really don’t. I used to, but I finally reached my limit some time ago. I guess what bothers me about him (aside from ruining roundtable discussions) is that he’s such an irresponsible journalist (Bautista article, Pat Burns tweet, Brodeur book/Pat Quin conflict of interest, etc, etc.) Yet, there doesn’t seem to be any accountablity. Not only that, but he lands a plum gig like PTS. Doesn’t seem right to me. Pelley and McCown like him and they’re pretty good friends to have. He’d better hope it works out, because I believe the bridge to TSN/Globe Media is burnt to sinders.

As for people bitching about sports media or certain personalities who are always in your face, well, that’s kind of the point of this blog. If you don’t like it, don’t read it. 🙂

Would love your thoughts, please comment.x
