Once again accusations on The Fan (in a jocular way by Tim and Grange) that the British press refer to Andy Murray as English/British (not the same thing Grange!) when he wins, Scottish when he loses. Is there any evidence of this, or is it just a meme started by McCown that the other Fan presenters in awe of him are mindlessly repeating?
When Andy Murray won his semi-final at the 2011 Australian Open one of the headlines on The Guardian website said “Briton now faces Novak Djokovic in the final”………………..after he lost in the final one of the headlines on that same website said “Scot now without a set from three grand slam finals”
The ‘joke’ has seemingly been around for years. I don’t think it’s exclusive to 590.
Last year Andy Murray appeared in a comedy video-clip from the BBC – “comedy relief” – where in the video he makes the same joke himself (“British/Scottish”). It’s rather funny. Here’s a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3ynYHHH9e0
I lived in the UK for many years so I’m familiar with it going back to the 80s. It’s largely a myth when it comes to the Scots though not for athletes from Northern Ireland but that’s mostly because a lot of English don’t think of them as all that British but as Irish. I’ve seen nothing in the British press to suggest any such treatment of Murray. David Coulthard, a Scottish F1 driver said something similar in the 1990s but when asked about it couldn’t come up with any examples. ScotsNats obviously try to play this victim card for their own purposes. I very much doubt the very insular crew at The Fan know much about any of this.
