Paul Beeston Follows Brian Burke

Paul Beeston is pissed off.

Well, so too are Toronto Blue Jays fans, so at least he is in good company.

I could have sworn that when I read Steve Simmons’s piece on the sockless prez, I had heard similar words before, indeed I had.

First, here is Beeston:

“I’ve never experienced a year like this one, where so many things have gone wrong. You go back to the beginning of the year, even into the season, attendance was coming back, our TV numbers were great, there was a good buzz about the team. But once the team started to go south, it just seemed to be one thing after the other. And it never stopped.

“It’s the one thing that keeps me up at night. When you build something and you don’t deliver, there is a feeling of emptiness. It’s felt by fans and players and by the front office as well. We all want to win. We have to learn from it. The hard thing is, it was almost like interest was spiking up instead of drifting up, and we were going on this 90-degree angle, a huge spike of interest, and then all this…”

Now for Burke:

“Two and a half weeks ago we were in the eighth spot, comfortable,” Burke said. “I don’t know — I’ve never had this before. I’ve never had a team fall off a cliff like this before in my life. I’ve had dips, I’ve had slumps, I’ve had rough patches. But this is akin to an 18-wheeler going right off a cliff. I’ve never seen anything like it before in my life. I don’t know what happened. I don’t know. I’ve never experienced this.

“I’m bewildered by it. It’s like somebody hit me with a two-by-four. I’ve never had this before, when a team just plain flat-out went into free-fall.”

So now that the have similar owners, do they have the same speech writers? 🙂
Is it something in the water?
Or, is it just another example of the curse of being a Toronto sports fan these days.

Pathetic times whatever it is….
