Toronto Blue Jays Trade Breaking On Twitter

I will have a roundup later, but if you are on twitter and not “tuned in” right now, you are missing a great moment in twitter “history”–big deal has been made between the Florida Marlins and Toronto Blue Jays and full details aren’t known. All the major US baseball reporters are all over it, tweeting like crazy, with the Canadian contingency chiming in.

Check it out great fun!

Just saw this and immediately went to Twitter. But I do believe it’s the Miami Marlins, not Florida anymore.

I wonder if Buehrle, and Johnson are only here for 1 year. Johnson will be a 29 year old free agent after next season. If he has a good season, hard to believe a team won’t give a 6’7″ left-hander more than a 5 year contract, which Jays don’t do. Buehrle deal with the Marlins was structured so they would get rid of him after next season anyway, they just did it 1 year earlier. He makes $11 million next season then $18 and $19 million in 2014 and 2015. I don’t believe the Jays are going to pay those final 2 years when Bautista, their best player is making $14 million for the rest of his contract.

Jose Reyes makes $10 and $16 million for the next 2 years then goes to $22 for the final 4 years of his contract. Again, I can’t see AA paying the $22 million; he’ll be dealt before that I think, maybe even before the $16 million kicks in. So the Jays aren’t really taking on a lot of money. Loria structured the deals knowing he would get rid of them before the big money kicks in, and that what AA will do too. By then, a more mature and consistent Lawrie, Gose, Acencibia or D’arnaud, Romero, Morrow, etc, will be ready to pick up the slack. This great deal by AA makes the Jays instant contenders and buys time for youngsters at the same time – at a manageable cost for the next 2 years. After getting rid of Vernon Wells, stealing Morrow, this is another Machiavellian masterpiece form AA. Brilliant.
