– Double-digit growth across all weekday programming –

TORONTO (December 7, 2012) The listeners have spoken – and once again, Sportsnet 590 The FAN continues to be the overwhelming radio destination for Toronto sports fans. According to yesterday’s BBM results, Sportsnet 590 The FANexperienced double-digit ratings growth in all weekday programming in the key sports demographic (Male 25-54). Sportsnet 590 The FAN’s total share of tuning also increased by a whopping 45% for the R4 period (Oct. 22 to Nov. 25, 2012) over the same period last year.

“The results speak for themselves: Sportsnet 590 The FAN is unequivocally the most powerful sports brand in Canadian radio,” said Don Kollins, Program Director, Sportsnet 590 The FAN. “The fact that we continue to experience double-digit growth with our already commanding audience base exemplifies the power of the overall Sportsnet brand across all platforms, as well as the incredible talent of our on-air personalities who not only inform, but entertain better than anyone in the country. Our listeners tune to us first – and stay – because we offer the best in sports talk and provide the best sports content, analysis and breaking news.”

Each daytime show on Sportsnet 590 The FAN experienced double-digit growth for the R4 period year-over-year:

· Brady and Lang in the Morning (5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. ET) – increased share of hours tuned to 6.8 share from 6.2 (10% increase)

· The Jeff Blair Show (9 a.m. to Noon ET) – increased share of hours tuned to 6.5 share from 4.2 (55% increase)

I knew that TSN Radio was pulling in flies, but this is way beyond that. I do hope they stick around, if anything to raise the level of Fan 590, but they may pull the plug with those pathetic rating numbers.

I have the same thoughts Brian. I don’t really listen to TSN Radio, but I definitely don’t want it to get the axe, because there’s no doubt The Fan has gotten MILES better since TSN Radio came about.

I wonder if it reaches a point where they do pull the plug? I’m not sure TSN Radio has even fared better than The Team did years ago.

I bet Shannon flew back from NYC today just so he could be on the roundtable. 🙁

Will this finally end the Dan Patrick experiment? If his show can’t make any gains on Blair when there are no hockey games, when will it? When the Jays made their big trade, on 1050 Patrick probably was interviewing the backup QB of the Rams or shooting baskets with his unfunny producers. When the lockout end and Blair does 3 hours on it(and concentrates generally more on hockey) maybe the Patrick show can offer an interview with a coach of some college football team nobody in TO cares about. If you knew that Jim Rome’s show failed on The Team why even try with another US show? And no, Scott MacArthur isn’t the answer either. Could the TV part of TSN have the ineptitude of 1050 without heads rolling?

Happy to see Blair and Ted and Sam do well. I give them full marks for the effort they put in.

Jumpin Jahoosafats! Those are some stinky numbers for TSN! Was The Team even that bad?

I have tried to listen to TSN but I hear nothing to make me stick with it. Or maybe I am so used to The Fan’s production quality that I can’t handle theirs.

Oh well. The only thing for Cybul to do now is adopt the Millwall chant:

Agreed. The only TSN radio I listen to is the evening stuff. Cybulski is painfully bad. I can’t imagine what they possibly saw in him. Terribly uninformed takes on the issues, not funny (but thinks he is – bad combo) and a horrible voice.

TSN Radio has little hope of gaining listeners until the NHL returns and they get half of the Leafs games. I’ve read multiple comments about their supposedly weak signal, and stations at the lower end of the AM dial may have a longer range, but I’ve never had trouble receiving 1050 anywhere in the GTA from Aurora to Oakville. Apparently the 1010 AM frequency gets good ratings, and 1050 was a popular station once upon a time.

They need to put Matt Cauz back on the morning show, whether it’s with Mike Richards or someone else. They were somewhat entertaining together, but are largely wasted when they are forced to work alone.

And despite the supposed high TV ratings in the Toronto market for the Grey Cup (were there a lot of 12-year-old girls watching for the half-time show?), the presumably TSN-mandated heavy focus on the CFL has to be cut way back if they want to attract and keep listeners. I’ll admit that in the last two months I’ve seen more people wearing Argo clothing than I’d seen in the last 20 years, but it’s still not that many and it’s largely due to filling a void left by other distinctive circumstances that will not continue indefinitely.

Dan Patrick (IMO) is the best there is on Radio in North America, 2nd would be Mike & Mike on ESPN Radio. I can’t understand why folks from Toronto don’t enjoy him. Is it because all they (Toronto Sports Fans) care about is the useless Leafs or anything Hockey? It’s really a shame.
