Typical Bob interview with Brunt. Pretend criticism of the fact that Brunt has gone to New Orleans while really shilling for Sportsnet that fact that Brunt is in New Orleans. But to be fair, there was some meat in the interview. Did you know that the city of New Orleans is mad at Roger Godell?
Brunt is typically useless. How long did his Team1050 show last when he left Bob for his own gig?I wonder why he has fans on this site. I keep hearing about Brunt’s brilliance without being given any details.
When you compare Brunt’s knowledge of EPL vs that of Brady, La Liga, and Serie A vs that of Sid, nfl and cfl vs a host of others and hockey vs everyone else, you see what’s missing from his mindless generalities. The fact that he had a baseball HOF vote is a joke.
It will be entertaining to compare his idiotic NFL reports with that of Mike Hogan for 1050. Look for Bob to have more athletes, as he tries to hold off Bill Carroll. It won’t matter, over the next year or two Carroll will tear apart PTS.

Martin – Could you clarify your feelings on Brunt for us?

Always nice to hear Bobcat slurping George Gillett. In the interests of balance, he could have Ray Evernham or Richard Petty on so they can tell us all about the trail of unpaid bills Gillett left behind in Nascar. Of course, since Bob doesn’t do any show prep, he wouldn’t know how to do a Google search of Gillett and Nascar. If you live in Markham you should probably do that. And then run away as fast as you can.

Bob MCown should never be confused with anyone with high ethical standards. Like him or not, he’s a sports talk radio host who’s job it is to entertain, and nothing more.

Ex-Leaf, Jeff O’Neill is doing a good job with Jim Tatti tonight. Good anecdotes and analysis. And all done in a fluent, non hysterical tone. I haven’t heard him on 1050 before, maybe today is his first day, which might account for his quietness at times. Hopefully they use him on the post game shows, and Leafs at Six. It would be nice to hear an ex-player’s views on those shows sometimes.

Damien Cox posted this on Twitter over the weekend:

“Lowest of the low: Giving a guy the cloak of anonymity to take shots at another for his charity work. Disgusting journalism, but typical”
Does anyone know who he is talking about?……………is he taking yet another shot at his pal Simmons ???

I have to guess that this is the quote he is referring to:

“An NHL GM on all the charitable work Brian Burke did while he was with the Leafs: “Most people who do charity work don’t have to tell people they’re doing it. Brian had to.”

@ Martin – Bill Carroll was on the air in Toronto for a very long time before his leaving for LA 18 months ago. He wasn’t an unbeatable behemoth on 640 and 1010. I’d be surprised if him doing a pretaped show from LA on a newstalk station is really something that would affect PTS too much.

There are many reasons to criticize Burke, but I think slagging the charity part is unfair. Part of what he was trying to do for the charities was to raise their profile and awareness for the causes, so it’s only natural he’d be part of the spotlight involving the charities otherwise there’d be no spotlight. It feels like now that he’s out the door people are taking out all their frustration over his mishandling of the Leafs on him as a person and that there’s nothing positive about him at all.

I agree 100% on Martin’s take on Brunt. I know a lot of clones here love him but really, what insight does he really offer? He also has the personality of unpainted drywall with his “there ya go” and “uh humm” which doesn’t help.

An then there’s McCown with this terrible lisp. Has he ever pronounced an “s” that he doesn’t lisp? Anyone???

What is with Cox’s love affair with Burke? Its bordering on creepy.

Previously it was obvious he was up Burke’s posterior but now that he has been canned, its beyond obvious – to the point where Cox should seek psychiatric help.

.

Brunt excels at interviews – he is very talented at asking questions that uncover hidden assumptions, and questions that draw out important ideas. He is very very good at this, perhaps better than anyone else on radio in Toronto.
.

I stopped reading him ages ago so I have no view on what he brings to the table there. As a kid i read his globe column often, and it was clear that he was on a different plane of analysis than the rest. But now with blogs and such i can get high level (and low level) commentary in many places. People will link to columns worth reading, and so i rely on the efforts of others to tell me when something is worth my time.
.

p.s. People rarely link to anything by Brunt on the blogs i read, so maybe his best days are behind him.

Jeff O’Neill is dull and boring with no sense of humour. MacArthur should always be paired with Tatti. You may lose some the analysis of a former player but I’ll take a more entertaining show anytime.

Listening further to TSNR with Jeff O’Neill and Jim Tatti. O’Neill sounds like he’s in a funeral home. No enthusiasm whatsoever and far too serious sounding. Really hope this is a very temporary stint…
