Changes In The Air In Canadian Sports Media World

Changes In The Air In Canadian Sports Media World

Happy Friday all.

Do you remember when this article was written?

“Co-anchors Jay Onrait, 37, and O’Toole, 36, have become national celebrities in Canada, akin to the star status afforded SportsCenter stars Keith Olbermann and Craig Kilborn in the U.S. in the 1990s. YouTube clips of the pair’s antics have racked up hundreds of thousands of views.”

Well, be careful what you ask for…

Multiple sources are telling me that boh Jay Onrait and Dan O’Toole are headed south, south of the border. No, the duo aren’t headed for greener pastures in Bristol Connecticut, the duo are headed to Fox Sports who is now fully focused on taking on ESPN!

When this is all happening hasn’t been confirmed at least to me, but I am told it’s a done deal.

Who is replacing the popular duo on TSN? I have no clue. Yet.

Canada continues to be a good training ground for US media companies to grab top notch talent. These two certainly aren’t the first. They won’t be the last. No, this isn’t a plug for the fine folks at the College of Sportsmedia, but if I was young and looking to get in the business I know where I’d be going to school.

It will be VERY interesting to see how the duo’s “Schtick” plays in the USA. I couldn’t be happier for the duo, opportunity only knocks so many times and when it does…..

More details to follow.

I have one more piece of news to share, but need to confirm it’s validity, but it’s print related. Stay tuned

That’s a blow to TSN. They were by far the best anchors on sports tv.

Goodbye and good riddance. If I wanted shtick I would watch the Comedy Network. Onrait’s whiny, effeminate voice reminds me of Chris Cuthbert, and not in a good way. O’Toole is just a dime a dozen prettyboy tool.

Speaking of good looks, hopefully this will give more airtime to the Hedgers and Gaillards of the world, who tell sporting news with a straight face and look good doing it.

Even the Prime Minister was a Jay and Dan fan:

Worst play of the day: Jay & Dan leaving TSN. Best of luck in the US, gents.

Small sample size (tm bruce arthur) but when they guest-hosted on 1050 for cybulski, the show was so bad i turned it off within the first segment.

I have no context for them on tv.

Too bad it wasn’t Hedger and “Dutchy”. Oh, wait – only the talented ones leave.

It won’t be long before Kate Bierness goes too, I’m afraid.

The channel that will become Fox Sports 1 on August 17 is already available in Canada as Speed (formerly Speedvision). But the programming format change could cause it to be removed from the CRTC’s list of allowed “non-Canadian” channels, if complaints are received about it becoming direct competition to Canadian channels, in this case most likely TSN and Sportsnet. Yet, last I heard, Bell and Rogers have said nothing, even two months after the confirmation of the Fox Sports 1 plan, which followed about a year of speculative stories that Fox did not deny.

It will be interesting to see what happens. A possibly similar case in 2004-5 involved The Canadian Association of Broadcasters asking to have Spike TV (formerly The Nashville Network) removed, but it was allowed to stay.

I had no idea those two were that popular. I don’t really understand why. They just seem to be regular hosts on an evening sports highlight show when I see them at night. But, like Alex, when I heard them on the radio, it was so awful to me I turned off.

Too bad. Their shtick isn’t for everyone but I think they are quite funny, certainly far more entertaining than anybody else on TSN (or any Canadian network for that matter). I fear TSN will try to find a similar duo to act like Jay and Dan and it will end up being painfully bad.

I agree with Sam and Ami……………I don’t understand their appeal……………I don’t find them funny at all, but maybe I am too old to appreciate their brand of “humour”…………..I could tolerate O’Toole at times but I have no time for Onrait

Thanks to people on YouTube, I always got a kick at the way they and TSN presented their “Top 10” lists. And having seen lots and lots of lists with Dan and Jay

They were unwatchable as far as I’m concerned. It shocked me to hear how long they had been on the air together, as they never had me watching their shtick, which was completely unappealing to me.

Lot of salty old dogs on here. You don’t get the humor because your probably one foot in the grave. They appeal to the younger crowd (most anyway) who, if you didn’t realize, are changing the country for better. Evolution baby, get back in your armchairs.
