Prime Time Sports Review for Friday, May 24, 2013

By Ami Angelwings

4pm hour – Bob McCown hosting

First segment: Replay of Thursday’s interview with Pat Gillick, senior advisor to the Philadelphia Phillies

  • Gillick talks about the passing of Epy Guerrero, shares his memory of Guerrero, talks about the Jays recruiting Dominican players in the 80s

Second segment: Interview with Paul Tracy, professional racecar driver

  • Tracy talks about the reasons he didn’t have much success at the Indy 500, and why he was successful that one time
  • Bob asks if there’s a specifically different skillset for riding a big oval vs a road course, Tracy says there’s differently a different mindset and people who do well at the Indy 500 are very smooth and don’t move a lot
  • Tracy talks about how James Hinchcliffe seems a lot more confident to him than before

5pm hour – Roundtable discussion with Bob McCown, John Shannon, Gord Kirke and Paul Jones

First segment: The Toronto Blue Jays, the passing of former scout, Epy Guerrero

  • Roundtable talk about the Jays and are hopeful that if the Jays can be at .500 by the all-star break, they will have a shot at making the playoffs, agree that the Jays are playing a lot better
  • Shannon says that he’s not worried about the pitching if the Jays keep hitting like this
  • Bob rants about J.P. Arencibia and that he strikes out so much, wants to bring up Thole and give him a chance to win the job
  • Kirke and Bob talk about the importance of Epy Guerrero to the Jays in recruiting Dominican players in the 80s

Second segment: Bryan Colangelo being kept on as President of the Raptors

  • Shannon believes this was MLSE learning from the Brian Burke situation and giving Colangelo a more substantial position than a senior consultant which everybody knows means nothing
  • Bob thinks this is a bad decision and thinks that MLSE needs a total structural change, and that it can’t be that every single GM and coach that the teams hire suddenly becomes stupid when they come to Toronto, but that MLSE itself is the problem

Third segment: Sergio Garcia’s comments about Tiger Woods and fried chicken

  • Bob thinks it was the wrong thing to say but wasn’t as bad as what Fuzzy Zoeller said because Fuzzy doubled down, but that it was still really stupid
  • Jones thinks it wasn’t malicious, but it was stupid and problematic
  • Bob and Shannon think that Garcia needs to publicly offer the olive branch to Tiger Woods, Kirke thinks everybody will assume it was his PR people telling him to, Bob says it doesn’t matter, he has to do it

6pm hour – Roundtable continues

First segment: The NHL Playoffs

  • The roundtable doesn’t think that the Ottawa Senators will be able to come back against the Penguins and have little chance tonight
  • Bob thinks the Detroit Red Wings are this years’ Los Angeles Lakers and that they got hot at the right time and are taking their regular season ending momentum into the playoffs
  • Shannon thinks there’s something wrong going on with the Blackhawks

Second segment: The Vancouver Canucks keeping Mike Gillis and firing Alain Vigneault

  • Shannon talks about Star Trek Into Darkness and Alice Eve being in her underwear in the film
  • Bob thinks Gillis should have been fired instead of Vigneault, and the state of the team is his responsibility
  • Bob thinks that the Canucks are in danger of becoming the Calgary Flames, Shannon and Jones disagree

Third segment: Prime Time Bullets

  • First bullet is about the Raptors possibly changing their team name
  • Shannon doesn’t think the Raptors are going to change the name, Jones says a lot of people want the Huskies, Bob likes the name too
  • Kirke thinks that changing the name of the team won’t make the team win so they shouldn’t change it
  • Shannon disagrees with Jones that the Raptors are Canada’s team
  • Second bullet is about Phil Jackson saying he’d take Bill Russell over Michael Jordan to start a team
  • Shannon agrees with Jackson, Kirke says he’d take Michael Jordan, Jones says he’d take Russell, and Bob says he’d take Magic Johnson

It looks like J.P. Arencibia is the new Toronto athlete in Bob’s doghouse, supplanting even Colby Rasmus, who Bob seems to not dislike as much as he used to now since he’s discovered that Rasmus can take a walk.  Now, every time the Jays come up on the show, there’s a part where Bob rants about what a bad player Arencibia is, how he can’t catch the ball and always strikes out, and that Bob wants Thole to come up to platoon and maybe take his job.  It’s kind of a quick turnaround because not too long ago, in the off season, Bob liked Arencibia and thought he had improved a lot, but his performance this year has really changed things in Bob’s eyes.

Bob seemed grumpy again today after seeming happier on the Monday roundtable, he’s back to “get me to summer vacation so I can golf” Bob.  He was angry about Arencibia, angry about MLSE, pretty forceful about what Garcia needs to do, very negative about the Canucks, and generally argumentative today.  It didn’t help that Brunt was missing again and Shannon was there, and as usual Bob and Shannon were arguing with each other.  Kirke was his usual quiet self on topics that aren’t law, and Jones occasionally interjected, but it was mostly Bob and Shannon.

Shannon’s random Star Trek tangent was odd, as was him talking about Alice Eve in her underwear and how much he liked that scene.  Bob wisely put an end to that quickly.

The end of the show amused me because you know if anybody else picked a player not on the table, Bob would yell at them for choosing somebody else, or sitting on the fence. xD

I remember a couple of weeks ago Rob Ford was on 1050 with Macko/Cauz/Landsberg saying his family has had Leaf season tickets for as long as he can remember. How were they able to afford it?

While completely understandable from a programming POV, the new 4:00 is annoying for the small percentage of 3-hour/podcast listeners.

But better than phone calls… 🙂

i’ve added a bunch of different podcast feeds to iTunes in the last month and so i’ve fallen several weeks behind on PTS and have been catching up over the last few days.

in the past i tolerated Shannon if there was an interview i particularly wanted to hear. those days are over. with so much good quality sports radio available, life is just too short to waste it listening to someone who is so willfully bad at his job.

Mike, would you mind listing some of those other podcasts? I find the Grantland stuff pretty good, but I’m always looking for others. Cheers.

The itunes ratings for sports podcasts:

Interesting, Tsn is beating Bob. I’m having trouble listening to as much sports radio as I usually did, after that Leafs/Bruins series drained me. Might last the whole summer unless we get some Leaf trades. Or are we left with hearing a positive spin on any little thing the Jays do. Sure they lost 6-5 yesterday, but they were down 5-2 and almost came back!

If someone asked me who I wanted to hear on the PTS roundtable I’m pretty sure that Shannon, Kirke, and Jones would all be near the bottom of my list

I would take podcast rankings with a grain of salt since:

– newer shows can have an advantage since they benfit from a boost of fresh subscribers

– as we all know and complain about, the TSN podcast is for all shows. I have maybe 20 downloads i dont want a day just to get Naylor’s show, but all those DL count,

Hope the Jays fans in the 500 level don’t get any ideas:

Spider Jones critiques Toronto radio:

Spider Jones ‏@spider_jones 1h
Don’t be offended my white friends and bi-racial children but Toronto radio is more white than wonder bred. You talking heads have no vision

I listen to a load of podcasts (it’s how I mostly listen to The Fan shows I want to hear now, since I alternate between transit and car).

As for good sports podcasts: I’ve said it before, but check out the Dan LeBatard show from Miami. Quite nationally focussed, and such a great show. ‘Fantasy Focus’ is pretty good if you’re into fantasy baseball/football. And, if you’re a stat minded Jays fan, the Drunk Jays Fan podcast is great.

Hard to argue with Spider Jones on that. Off the top of my head I can’t think of a non white host in Toronto radio. I’m sure they exist, but it seems a bit disproportionate in a city like this.

I wonder what bob will have to say about his whipping boy JP on Monday.

I suspect that Bob will say the “even a blind squirrel will find the occasional nut” line.

Also, he’s probably going to rip on Lawrie, or Zaun will be on to do so.

Burkie’s bully tactics are apparently not working very well with the Internet

my favourite quote: ““The plaintiff does not know who the message board defendants are or where they are located, and there is no cost-effective means of discovering this information”

Would love your thoughts, please comment.x
