Since I’ve been doing a lot of driving lately, I’ve been listening to a lot of TSN1050, and I feel like TSN1050 right now is around where FAN590 was 5-6 years ago when I started to listen to it regularly and really enjoyed Prime Time Sports, and Jim Kelley was the alternate co-host and Bruce Arthur was an occasional co-host. What I mean is that it’s more about analysis and talking about sports issues than it is about personality and schtick, which seems the majority of Sportsnet590 is now between over-the-top ranting from the likes of Blair, Seixeiro, Consentino, Shannon, Cox, and “Bad Bob” (which we’re getting way more frequently than “Good Bob”). The advantage 590 has over TSN is that it has more “personalities” and if you like them, then it’s more entertaining than straight analysis with more low-key personalities, but if you don’t, it’s practically unlistenable, and the above personalities have basically made most of 590 programming unlistenable to me. At least on TSN I can generally listen even if I have no clue who is talking, it’s never that aggravating, over the top, or just two people yelling at each other (I could be wrong, my sample space is still limited, and I might just be missing the yelling). I do wish they would talk less hockey though, it always seems like the chances of me flipping to hockey analysis on TSN1050 is high.

However, I listened to TSN Drive with Bryan Hayes and Bruce Arthur the other day and it reminded me a lot of what old PTS used to be, and I realized just how far PTS has gone towards “personality” from where it used to be, especially when Brunt isn’t there. Brunt is still a lot like Arthur, opinionated, but able to express them without crossing over into ranting, interrupting, or schtick (like Seixeiro), and he’s a moderating influence on Bob. But honestly, it feels like even though Bob is still at the beginning of his last contract, he already has one foot out the door. He sounds disinterested all the time, and grumpy more frequently. He used to just get like this in the summer, but now he’s like this all the time, and he seems more interested in his other projects, and “Bad Bob” is showing up a lot more. I still love it when he’s on, but even I (his biggest fangirl) have to admit that he’s on a lot less, and the crappy co-hosts they keep giving him aren’t helping.

But it’s not just Bob, as I said. Sportsnet590 has just way too many people who are all just about being over-the-top yelly personalities without a volume control, and who make bad, immature jokes, and it’s a real turn off.

Ami, nice analysis.
Regarding Bob, it’s not just since he is at the beginning of his last contract, he has disinterested, bored, stale, etc. long before that.
I find TSN 1050 refreshing, better talk radio generally speaking.
The only schtick I find that is not needed is Mike Richards routine with his so called comedy bits. It has been nice with him being on vacation, his fill ins have kept the show to the talking of sports.
I think it will be interesting when Bob does retire, then the drive time audience will be wide open. How many listeners will stick with 590, or migrate over to 1050 once he’s gone will be an interesting thing to see, as to how it unfolds.

+1, nice analysis.

Perhaps consider writing this up as a separate blog post so that the handful of people here can comment on it.

Also, if you have access to the code for this site, maybe see if line-up posts with 0 comments can be separated into their own feed/column. It sucks when a decent discussion gets bumped off the main page to make room for content no one cares about.

Minor correction…………..on Monday it was Bill Hayes who was with Bruce Arthur and not Bryan Hayes

Just imagine how much more “over-the-top yelly” 590 would be these days if Kypreos & MacLean weren’t on summer vacation

Sorry, I meant Bill Hayes, I just got the two mixed up. Thanks. 🙂

Would love your thoughts, please comment.x
