Weekend Soccer/Futbol Open Thread

By Alex

Trying something new this week. Thanks to TSM for giving it the okay.

It seems there are a number of posters here who like to comment on the footy, so I figured I would make an open thread for this weekend’s games.

The big story is probably the debut of Gareth Bale for Real Madrid this Saturday vs Villarreal (4 ET). Earlier in the day in La Liga, Barcelona take on Sevilla (2 ET).

In England, the early kick-off (7:45 ET) sees Manchester United take on Crystal Palace. Will former Palace striker Wilfried Zaha take on his old team? Saturday also sees Mark Hughes and Stoke take on his former club, Manchester City. And most importantly, it’s a battle of good vs evil as Everton face off against Chelsea. For you Grantland fans, you know this is the Men in Blazers Derby, with Roger Bennett’s Evertonians trying to get their first win vs Michael Davies’ Blues.

Closer to home, the big game in MLS is tonight in Seattle, as the teams with the two best records in the league, Seattle and Real Salt Lake, do battle.

For your reading pleasure, check out the Guardian’s (and the Football Weekly podcast) Barry Glendenning  talking to Samuel Eto’o.

Usually an excellent show is the official BPL podcast. This week hosted by Jacqui Oatley.

Too bad we in Canada can’t watch Spanish soccer. Well, not legally.

BTW kudos to Rogers (seriously!) for its comprehensive coverage of World Cup qualifiers this week.

On the Sept. 15 Sunday Supplement: David Moyes/Ashley Young and diving, Roy Hodgson and England, Gareth Bale, Spurs fans and anti-Semitism, and referee Mark Halsey’s forthcoming autobiography. Good show.
