It was kind of sad to hear the Star’s Doug Smith make excuses as to why he got scooped by the Sun’s Ryan Wolstat on the NBA All-Star Game announcement. You get beat, just man up and return the favour next time.

I am listening much more to Melnick now in Montreal, so missed it, but I am not surprised to hear the sour grapes eminating from Mr. Smith, who has zero street cred amongst any reputable Raptor fan, as the last time that he was critical of a Raptors play, I mean really critical, would be the first time. See Raptors apologist, and you get my drift.

Ryan on the other hand actually calls it like he sees it, with no pretences, and it is refreshing to hear an honest take on the team whenever he reports on them. I am pleased that he was able to break the story, and maybe this is indicative of how Leiweke, now in charge, is not going to pay any kudos to Smith and his reporting ways, and reward the journalists who actually critique the team for what they are. This indeed would be refreshing, and show that he is serious about winning, and not just paying lip service to it, as our past GM’s and ownership have done.

surreal moments in sports radio:

Segment 1: McCown and Cox talking about goon culture in hockey and how sickening it is.

Segment 2: Zaun telling a story about how his A-ball team sent 8 guys from the opposing team to the hospital in a brawl. Bob and Damian laughing hysterically.

I think it’s more likely in this case that Wolstat just outworked Smith. Actually made a phone call or two on the day the league was announcing where the 2015 ASG would be played. Even on the phone with McCown, Smith said he was coasting through the day. You snooze, you lose. And then, apparently, you pretend it doesn’t matter. Even though your excuse-making belies the fact that it actually does.

Would love your thoughts, please comment.x
