OT: The parochialism of Canadian sports media

Sportsnet has been covering the Davis Cup all year but now that we are in the final – no coverage. At least not today, they’re showing doubles tomorrow. I understand them giving World Cup soccer a priority but those matches don’t begin until 2.30pm. They could’ve at least shown the Djokovic rubber/match which has begun more than four hours before the soccer. Sportsnet One is showing a live Canadian friendly (ie exhibition) soccer match. I can understand that particular decision. But showing endless hours of reruns of Connected and Hockey Central on the main Sportsnet channels and, more importantly perhaps given that it’s a work day, no tennis being steamed at their website is a poor effort from Sportsnet.

As of now the Sportsnet Davis Cup page hasn’t even been updated since Canada got knocked out nearly two months ago. This kind of insular nationalism reflects poorly on Rogers. (Of course, Rogers are not so nationalistic when it comes to hiring cheaper foreign labour for their call centres, but that’s another matter).

    who cares about Tennis

Well, we’re probably thin on the ground in Bolton where, I’m told, the locals eat their Sunday dinner at Tim Horton’s, but we do exist.

    “who cares about Tennis”

The kind of people who care about proper punctuation marks – that’s who.

A recent survey published in USA Today indicated that less than 1% of Americans considered tennis as their favourite sport. I see no reason why this number would be materially different in Canada. So the answer to the originally posed question is that not too many people care about tennis. To the tennis supporters that ridiculed Bolton and the use of punctuation, you are a perfect caricature of why tennis is not mainstream.

    Petty children ITT.

Who really gives a fuck if you don’t like a certain sport. Other people do, so they should be allowed to watch it.
