Toronto Sports Media Olympics MSM Basketball

By TSM

Happy speed skating Monday!

Wholly crap is winter always this long?

So, as promised in the spirit of the Winter Olympics we are going to bring you the Toronto Sports Media Olympics, asking you the consumers who is the best in various categories of sports media here in Toronto.

The first category is NBA basketball.

The question: Who in your minds are the Gold, Silver and Bronze providers of NBA coverage here in Toronto?

The criteria is simple: They must create content, so either written (doesn’t have to be a paper), audio or video that is created for the Toronto NBA market. So a play by play person on a radio station is eligible. A writer for a newspaper is eligible. A writer for a USA based website or blog is not eligible. So while Yahoo has some awesome writers, they don’t count. Lastly, the nominee should cover basketball as their main sport so I wouldn’t expect to see any of the feature type writers here.

A sample(non-exhaustive) list in NO order : Eric Smith, Matt Devlin, Jack Armstrong, Eric Koreen, Ryan Wolstat, Doug Smith, Paul Jones etc

Happy voting!

Gold Medal – Zarar Siddiqi of http://www.raptorsrepublic.com who runs the website that I have religiously followed for years, and sat next to earlier this year for the game against San Antonio. What you get is completely uncensored and humorous musings on the state of the Raptors, plus quick post-game recaps done by his capable staff with letter grades, and where the readers can vote along as well. Game recaps are fantastic, with tons of analytical analysis plus actual video analysis and commentary done on them. This blog has it all, and is my go-to Raptors source.

Silver Medal – Adam Francis of http://www.raptorshq.com who runs this site and is the head writer as well. Adam has had press credentials for an eternity, and has all the street cred you need to gain all the access that he has. No better way to prep for the game with the game day preview and post-game article summing it up. This used to be my gold medal choice but RR has stepped up its game big time and is a clear winner for me.

Bronze Medal – Tough one, as I am now looking for my favourite MSM writer who I would go to, and there are so many, that I will just gang them all up as I read them all. Eric Koreen and Tim Chisholm are the best at combining writing with detailed analysis, while Ryan Wolstat is more of a Raptors generalist, but one I enjoy following as well.

If I could vote for someone who would be disqualified from the competition it would be Doug Smith, who has forever been a Raptors apologist, and who always plays it safe to keep his sources intact. He has zero street cred amongst any knowledgable Raptor fan, and don’t get me started on some of the broadcasting end, where Leo Rautins is an automatic mute for me, he is that bad and that annoying.

My comment is waiting for moderation, likely due to my gold and silver medal choices having their webpage links on them. As a result, I will post without them now, and TSM can either delete one or the other, depending on if he wants to leave the links there or not.

Gold Medal – Zarar Siddiqi of Raptors Republic who runs the website that I have religiously followed for years, and sat next to earlier this year for the game against San Antonio. What you get is completely uncensored and humorous musings on the state of the Raptors, plus quick post-game recaps done by his capable staff with letter grades, and where the readers can vote along as well. Silver Medal – Adam Francis of Raptors HQ who runs this site and is the head writer as well. Adam has had press credentials for an eternity, and has all the street cred you need to gain all the access that he has. No better way to prep for the game with the game day preview and post-game article summing it up. The brightest Raptor observers, and that of the NBA in general are Joseph Casciaro (@JosephCasciaro) of TheScore.com and Will Strickland (@WallStrizzle1) of TSN Radio. Scott Carefoot too, but he is retired.

Doug, I follow Joseph Casciaro on twitter already and he is excellent, and just added on Will Strickland as well.

Scott Carefoot works at Transcontinental Publications now, with The Hockey News one of their periodicals, but great call on him. I was one of his earliest followers, as he literally created the first Raptor blog. It was hilarious, and he is extremely witty and knowledgeable. I am actually Facebook friends with him, as well as follow him on Twitter, so still can get my Carefoot fix, although not much basketball to report from him, as he only covers it for pleasure, not for work.

Easily the Raptors Republic crew as Devotee said. Fact that author of this article didn’t even mention any of the RR guys tells me he/she doesn’t follow the scene at all.

I think Toronto is very deep in quality NBA media folks. I Like Koreen’s wit and Chisholm and Wolstat are good also. Matt Devlin is a pro, I also really enjoyed when he did the Jays games.

I sent Zarar from Raptors Republic the link to this site to let him know, and he wrote me back on it:

    Hi Brian,

Thanks a lot for taking the time out and posting the comment. I read it and really appreciate that you find value in the site.

Not only do I find value in the site, it is really all a hardcore Raptor fan needs. I forgot to mention, Zarar has a deep pool of talented writers and he does a weekly podcast that is thorough and enjoyable to listen to.

Tross31, TSM is a hockey puck, and does not follow the Raptors or the NBA other than a generalist level, no big deal, that is why he relies on us posters to help him out. I am happy to have the opportunity to do so, and help promote RR, who are too good to not get special mention.
