Toronto Sports Media Olympics Play By Play

Happy Valentines Day!

So, as promised in the spirit of the Winter Olympics we are going to bring you the Toronto Sports Media Olympics, asking you the consumers who is the best in various categories of sports media here in Toronto.

The next category is Play by Play- be it radio or TV- Any Toronto team counts

The question: Who in your minds are the Gold, Silver and Bronze play by play announcers here in Toronto?

The criteria is simple: They must be either THE voice, or A voice of a Toronto team either on radio, TV or internet. Any Toronto based team counts. This is not colour commentators so NO Jim Ralph, Ric Nattress etc.

Happy voting!

Overall quality is weak for a major market, but here goes.

Gold – Jerry Howarth, easy on the ears, calls a solid game, has enough anecdotes to keep you engaged, with his longevity no doubt and ability to tap into decades of Blue Jay history he lived through a huge asset.

Silver – Joe Bowen, and while I don’t watch or listen to Maple Leafs hockey, catch enough of him just flipping that he seems to call a good game. I may be way off on this one, as it is more anecdotal than anything.

Bronze – Paul Jones, and more a case of liking him a lot more with his radio calls than Matt Devlin, who I have never liked from day 1, and long for the days of Swirsky, even with his catch-phrases and all.

I can’t comment on the Argos or other teams at all, but Jerry is the clear gold medal winner, and it is not even close. When I first came to Toronto in ’89 from Montreal and listened to Tom and Jerry, it was evident that Jerry was the real star, and while I appreciate the late Tom Cheek for his longevity and his passion for the game, it was Jerry who carried that duo and I tuned in for him, not for Tom.

More historical than current:

Baseball: Dan Shulman (with Buck Martinez)
Hockey: Joe Bowen (with Harry Neale / Jim Ralph)

I think I like some of the guys that used to be here (Shulman or Hughson for the Jays, Beyak or Ken Daniels for the Leafs) than the people that are here now

Having said that, I would give the gold to Bowen…………..yes he can be a homer, but nowhere near as bad as some of the play by play guys in the States………..he still calls a very good game, has a great voice, and a good sense of humour………..Howarth would probably get my silver……….it’s hard doing 162 games per year but he makes it sound easy

I don’t really have a bronze………..I don’t dislike Devlin or Paul Jones but I wouldn’t say that I am a fan………..Hogan is very passionate about football but I don’t listen to Argos games much……….and I haven’t been overly impressed with Jon Abbott so far

Gold: Joe Bowen- still has that big game call
Silver: Matt Devlin- finally has a good team to call. Occasionally can get away from the game but really that’s splitting hairs
Bronze: Jerry Howarth- was a bigger fan of Tom, but Jerry’s recall for random stories is something else

Would love your thoughts, please comment.x
