The Return Of Howard Berger?

By TSM

There was a time that Howard Berger was a true insider. You wanted to hear what Howard had to say. He has the inside the scoop; he had real sources. That was before he became angry Howard and started to be overly negative Howard.

Well, long since the time he left the Fan 590 and besides his blog he really hasn’t been seen or heard from since in any major way. He writes on his own blog…the horror…

In any event, tonight on his blog Howard has a Maple Leafs, Florida Panther rumor:

“The deal I’ve heard sounds more wild than far-fetched: Maple Leafs would trade Dion Phaneuf, Nazem Kadri and their first-round pick – eighth overall – to Florida for veteran Ed Jovanovski and the No. 1 overall selection. It would enable Toronto to draft potential franchise blue-liner Aaron Ekblad of the Ontario Hockey League Barrie Colts. Ekblad would ultimately join Morgan Rielly, Jake Gardiner and Matt Finn to form a young, potentially superb defense unit for the Maple Leafs.”

Whether or not this deal happens, it would be good if a guy like Howard could reclaim his mojo and get back to being connected and actually having sources. This is the type of stuff he was good at. It would be nice to see that again!

Why even give Berger and this ‘rumour any’ attention?

I don’t agree with this proposed Leafs trade rumor (although anything to get Phaneuf out is good). For me – why would the Leafs part with all of that and get only Jovanovski + the 1’st round pick back?

Despite that, I did enjoy Howard Berger’s insight + connections to the Leafs organization. His firing at the FAN was so uncalled for and I would take his sources over the circus of clowns they have reporting for the Leafs now.

I met Howard many years ago in the SkyDome press box. A top guy who had a lot of time for a sniveling journalism student. I hope he can make a comeback.

TSM, you try covering the Leafs as long as Berger did and see if you can avoid being overly negative, given the lack of production on the ice and the ineptitude in the front office.

Howard told it like it was, and his sources lay waste to the dribble put out by the public relations department, which always perpetuated the glass half full, when it wasn’t, other than MLSE’s coffers being filled without any effort.

With Leiweke in charge, this is the first time that their is real accountability by the teams, and I am sure when the Leafs turn things around that Berger will complement and acknowledge this as well.

I wish Howard the best, and he did btw have a 5 minute segment on Hockey Night in Canada at the Winter Classic this past year against Detroit. He is trying to hook up with the MSM, and you would think there is a place for him at Sportsnet with TSN with a few exceptions noted today, able to keep their hockey people. Unfortunately Howard has burned too many bridges over the years with his candid nature, and he does not have a Nelson Millman around to protect him any longer.

Howard was required listening for other members of the media on the Leaf beat. He often had the story first. Hope one of the sports media outlets gives him a chance. Miss his insight.

I always enjoyed listening to Howard on radio and still read his blog everyday. Surely Toronto media could find a place for him somewhere.
