Why Are Media Talking Raptors Playoffs

By TSM

Quick Thursday night hit.

Last couple of days I’ve heard multiple radio shows pondering the Torono Raptors probability and fate in the playoffs.

PLAYOFFS!!

It’s December

Does anyone remember the season the toronto blue jays were having?

We’re now worried about who the Raptors may play in the playoffs?????

When I say that it’s a miracle that sports radio hosts find enough to talk about 24/7 minutes this is a perfect example….

Wow, maybe go back to not posting so much. This is one of the most stupid things I’ve ever read.

You obviously have no clue about basketball and the division the Raptors are in. Yikes. This is Brady and “Western misogynist/racist” level bad. Yikes man.

The reason why that they are talking about the playoffs is because of how weak their division and the eastern conference is. If the Raptors were to go 30-26 the rest of the season they would have 50 wins. With 50 wins in the eastern conference you will have home court advantage in the eastern conference and not have to worry about making the playoffs.

As Ahmed correctly stated, the Raptors for all intensive purposes have theoretically, but of course not mathematically, clinched 1st place in the Atlantic Division, thus guaranteeing themselves home court in the first round. They are 20-6 and 9 games ahead of the 2nd place team.

Granted they have had a softer schedule of late, but beating the teams below you consistently in the standings just reinforces how deep they are without DeMar, and how efficient, not the type of team capable of going on a long losing streak.

TSM, your post demonstrates that you are not in sync with NBA reality, and the broadcasters talking playoffs are not off-track at all, but are just being realistic.

I am trying to think of one scenario where this team can not win the Atlantic, and it would have to go like this:

1. Lowry tears his ACL like now, and is out for the rest of the season.
2. DeMar can’t come back at all.
3. JV tears his ACL and is out the rest of the season.

Even with all of this, Masai can make trades in order to fill those holes adequately enough to win the Atlantic, not to mention that our 2nd unit is arguably better than the starting units of the teams behind us in the Atlantic.

I couldn’t help but look up the odds for the Raptors to win their division as per Hollinger:

http://espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/playoffodds

99.3%, so you are correct TSM in the sense that there is a .7% chance that the Raptors won’t win the Atlantic division right now. Stupid broadcasters taking it for granted Lol.

Good on TSM!

There’s still a season to be played. Why would you talk playoff matchups?
Teams well go on winning and losing streaks, coaches will gain or lose their command of the change room, players will be traded, injured, arrested or deemed expendable. With that in mind, why talk playoffs in December?

Furthermore, what’s with the Drake lovefest? What happens when he becomes old news or damages his reputation? No one living person should be given that much hype, as there’s still more than enough time for them to fall from grace!

Jock Strap, I do recall hearing on TSN 1050 them looking ahead to the playoffs, and I believe it was more in the sense of the seeding that we would have, as the discussion was on avoiding the 4 and 5 seed, who play each other, and then have to face the #1 seed next.

The eastern conference clearly has 5 teams at the top, and then the separation. By Christmas time you are who you think you are, and the conversation they had was completely justified.

For you to say Good on TSM! is ridiculous, as for him to make the analogy comparing the Blue Jays after their hot streak in May and making the playoffs with the format baseball uses compared to the Raptors where winning the division is over 99% guaranteed makes no sense on any level.

Sports talk radio does have a lot of time to fill, and why not talk about the playoffs with a Toronto team that has already locked it in by December. I am all for it. Enjoy the ride man.

I stopped visiting this site when I realized that the guy running it doesn’t discuss basketball. He doesn’t even like it. Total puckhead mentality of a guy who doesn’t know anything but hockey, but throws in a few other sports here and there. Give me a break.

The Raptors are absolutely making the playoffs if you know anything about the division they are in and their record. The Jays had a good month is a super long season….

Wow haters are gonna hate. Since no one has a clue what the playoff order will will it is ridiculous to be talking playoffs. But there are a couple if things in play. The Raptors historically (and the Leafs) have been bad jokes. Just making the playoffs has been an accomplishment. So everyone’s all giddy the Raps are likely headed there. In a sense it’s kind of sad that fans are so win deprived they need to look 50 games out rather than enjoying the game itself.

But don’t dismiss the corporate angle. It’s never too early to start pumping the $500 playoff tickets. And of course get the TV ratings up. When 75% of the team is owned by broadcast companies it’s just the way it is.

The sports media in this city love to talk about the Jays when I really don’t think the city of Toronto cares until the season begins. Yet, Bob McCown and his fan base of older men, just love to talk the Jays. But in the city nobody cares….it’s kinda like the reverse of the CFL. CFL gets great TV numbers apparently, yet in Toronto, nobody cares.

I think last season the Raptors earned a lot of street cred, they finished 4th in the conference and had one of the best second half NBA win/loss records in all of the NBA. So having a strong start this season I think they deserve the benefit of the doubt because they earned it. Of course they could fall of the map, and had an easy early start of the season, but they do look like a legit playoff team.

Unlike the Jays (and the Leafs for that matter) but lets focus on the Jays, they under-achieved big time in 2013 even though they did have a big winning streak in the middle of it, it still wasn’t enough to make them a playoff contender. So when early 2014 they had a great month of May, of course it would be foolish to think it a sure thing it will continue because in recent history it shows this team and management didn’t have what it takes to make it to the finish line.

Which of course what drives me crazy about Wilner and the Jays apologist out there who call people who are critical of the Jays or think they will not make the playoffs as “negative” It’s not negative when the past 20 years the not making the playoff prediction turns out to be correct? They Jays do not deserve the benefit of the doubt because they have never been able to prove anything in a consistent level.

Speaking of Wilner, he wins worst tweet of the month so far, on Dec 16 “Off-topic, what happened to the, what, 90% of the hockey media that were screaming Randy Carlyle HAD TO GO 12 games ago? #LeafsHadNoChoice” Wilner must be the dumbest person in sports, didn’t he live through the jays/Gibbons great month of May and how easy for the bottom to fall out of it when you have an inconsistent team like the Jays/Leafs. He makes the SAME freaking argument with Carlyle/Leafs, which of course the hilarious thing is after he tweeted that the Leafs went on a losing streak.
