Grey Cup Odds

The Grey Cup marks the end of the Canadian Football League’s season. It’s the CFL’s version of the Super Bowl. The 108th Grey Cup was played on December 12, 2021, at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, Ontario.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers won their second consecutive Grey Cup with a 33-25 overtime win against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Blue Bombers covered as a 3-point favorite, and the game sailed over the 44.5 total offered at DraftKings.

The 2020 Grey Cup was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2019, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers beat the odds by defeating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, 33-12, to win the Grey Cup championship. Hamilton entered the game as a 3.5-point favorite with the total set at 52. The underdog Blue Bombers covered the odds easily with the outright win, and the total went under with 45 points scored.

2022 CFL Grey Cup Futures Odds

Sportsbooks allow CFL fans to bet on the future outcome of the Grey Cup well in advance of the actual game. Betting on the Grey Cup winner is one of the most popular futures bets offered in the CFL. Winnipeg was installed as a +200 favorite to win the 2022 CFL Grey Cup shortly after its most recent Grey Cup win.

How To Place Grey Cup Bets Online In Canada

The first step in this process involves downloading a sports betting app to your mobile device. Head to the App Store and download FanDuel, for example. One important note here is to make sure it’s the sports betting app as opposed to the daily fantasy sports app for FanDuel. You’ll be asked to supply personal information such as your age, email address, password, and mailing address during the registration process. Be sure to select the available promotion of your choice before completing the process. Once your account is registered, you will need to fund it. FanDuel accepts debit/credit cards, personal bank accounts, or PayPal as funding options. Once your account is funded, you’ll be ready to wager on the Grey Cup. Simply navigate through the FanDuel app and find the Canadian Football League betting odds page. There will be a separate link available for futures bets on the Grey Cup. Click this and make your bet! One important last note is you should learn how to cash out your winnings on FanDuel.

How Grey Cup Odds Are Calculated

When it comes to the actual game, oddsmakers establish the opening line for the Grey Cup with the aim of attracting even money on both sides of the bet. This protects their sportsbook from having liability on the game. Oddsmakers pay particular attention to the performance of both teams during the season and playoffs. The relative strengths of both offenses and defenses also factor into the equation – and how they match up against the opposing team’s units.

Oddsmakers determine the spread, moneyline, and total for the Grey Cup in their opening line. It will look something like this:

Hamilton Tiger-Cats-3.5 (-112)-167O 52 (-105)
Winnipeg Blue Bombers+3.5 (-108) +147U 52 (-115)

Does this betting line look familiar? It’s the one we referenced above for the 2019 Grey Cup. This also includes the moneyline, so let’s explain that first. A $100 bet on Winnipeg to win outright (with no added points from the spread) brought you $147 on the moneyline. Conversely, you would have had to bet $167 on the favorite Hamilton to win $100 on the moneyline. This turned out to be a losing bet — note the odds for the spread and total bets as well. You needed to wager $108 and $115, respectively, to win $100 on each bet based on the game’s 33-12 outcome in favor of Winnipeg. It’s important to note that you don’t have to wager or try to win $100 on every bet. Rather, it’s a central benchmark figure used in the calculation of betting odds. Myriad factors can play into the Grey Cup betting line, including injuries during the season and good draft picks or trade acquisitions during the offseason.

CFL Grey Cup Odds And Betting Options In Canada

We’ve discussed the spread, total, and moneyline bets, but there are several other options available for the Grey Cup.

Parlay Bets

A parlay bet combines multiple bets and includes them in a single wager. For example, if you bet Winnipeg +3.5 points with under 52 points in a parlay bet on the 2019 Grey Cup, you cashed a winning ticket. Your $100 parlay ticket brought back $260.06, and you received your initial $100 stake back as well.

Parlay bets must include at least two wagers, but many sportsbooks will allow you to include as many as you want. The odds of winning a parlay bet decrease with the more selections you add to the wager.

Prop Bets

You’ve likely heard this term due to the NFL’s Super Bowl rolling around each February. Sportsbooks offer exotic prop bets on how long the national anthem will take or the result of the opening coin toss. Let’s examine a more conventional prop bet on the MVP of the Grey Cup. It will work exactly like the MVP prop for the Super Bowl. The 2020 Grey Cup, as mentioned, was canceled due to the pandemic.

In 2021, BetMGM offered the following Super Bowl MVP odds on these top five favorites to win the award.

Super Bowl LV Most Valuable Player

Patrick Mahomes-105
Tom Brady+200
Devin Booker                 +900
Travis Kelce      +1300
Clyde Edwards-Helaire        +1400

The Buccaneers defeated the Chiefs, 31-9. Brady threw for three TDs to win the Super Bowl LV MVP award. With a $100 prop bet on Brady, you would have doubled your money with a profit of $200. A $500 wager would have netted you $1,000.

While the MVP prop bet works the same in both the NFL and CFL, there are some stark differences between the two leagues. There are just nine CFL teams split between the West and East Divisions. Each team plays a 16-game schedule. The NFL’s 32 teams now play a 17-game schedule.

Other major differences include the length of field, number of players on the field, and the number of downs in a possession. You can read about all the differences between the CFL and NFL.

Strategies For Grey Cup Betting In Canada

With a game this big, there is a good chance that public betting money will affect the betting odds leading up to the Grey Cup. Sharp players, also known as sharps, will exploit these types of situations by fading the public play. This simply means going the other way. Stay current on the Grey Cup betting odds and pay particular attention to significant line moves.

Another strategic option for betting on the Grey Cup? Look for alternate lines that favor your betting position. Using the 2019 Grey Cup, as an example, underdog Winnipeg was getting +3.5 points on the standard line at -108 odds. Alternate lines gave you different options to bet on the Blue Bombers. For example, if you bet Winnipeg at -3, your risk would have produced a much greater reward at, say hypothetically, +240 odds. A $100 bet would have won you $240.

Have you heard the term “middling” as it relates to sports betting? This is an opportunity to bet both sides of the line when odds shift dramatically, creating a chance to end up in the middle of both spreads. This opportunity doesn’t always present itself, but stay abreast of the line movement to see if this is an option when betting on the Grey Cup.

What Is Live Wagering And Is It Available During The Grey Cup?

Live wagering is also known as “in-game” wagering and it’s become a popular option in recent years across North America. Live wagering is available on the Grey Cup, so don’t feel bad if you failed to get your bet in before kickoff. Oddsmakers utilize technology to update odds and lines on a real-time basis. In some cases, watching the game unfold before making your bet can be advantageous. Does it look to be a high- or low-scoring game? You can adjust your bet on the total throughout the game. Betting options also include the spread, moneyline, and many more. This type of betting can be intense, with new betting markets popping up only to disappear in seconds based on live bets hitting the adjusted line. If you’re new to sports betting, it’s advisable to wait before jumping into the deep end of this sports betting pool.
