Betting On The Toronto Maple Leafs

Ontario bettors only have one place to go to wager on the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) runs the only legal retail and online sportsbooks in the province. Retail sports betting is available for bettors 18 and older while online sports betting is limited to bettors 19 and older.

Anyone who can place a bet on the Toronto Maple Leafs winning the Stanley Cup this year may be well rewarded, too. The Maple Leafs came in first in their division during the 2020 season. The 2021-22 season could be their year to bring the Cup home to Toronto.

Where Can You Bet On The Toronto Maple Leafs?

There’s only one app that Ontarians can use to place sports wagers. PROLINE+ is OLG’s revamped sportsbook that the company released after Canada’s single-event sports betting law went into effect. Ontarians can download the app from the App Store or find the link to download it from the PROLINE+ website. Bettors can also place their bets in person through the traditional PROLINE platform with additional markets, including player props.

When bettors open PROLINE+, they will find lines on many sports leagues. The Toronto Maple Leafs’ championship lines will be in the NHL futures section. Since Ontarians only have one sportsbook, it has to accept the odds offered on PROLINE+. Ontario still has to pass regulations for awarding sports betting licenses to private companies before bettors have odds to compare.

PROLINE+ Online Sportsbook

PROLINE+ offers moneyline, futures, and a few prop bets in a traditional sportsbook format. However, there are fewer types of prop bets available to bettors on PROLINE+ than there are on a sportsbook like DraftKings. For example, PROLINE+ may offer bets on point totals at the end of a soccer game and the halfway point. But a private company may offer bets on who will score first and which team will receive the first penalty. Despite the limited smattering of wagers, the most popular bet types, sports, and leagues are accounted for in PROLINE+.

PROLINE+ also offers live betting with simulcasting on many of its mainstream sports. It’s a modern feature that even some private sportsbooks aren’t sophisticated enough to offer. So, OLG has a strong product to offer Ontarians.

Bettors can only place legal online sports wagers through PROLINE+. However, there are plenty of Toronto Maple Leafs lines for bettors to choose from. Bettors will find plenty of game lines, futures, and prop bets on PROLINE+. Since it’s available online, anyone in Ontario with an internet connection can place a bet on the Maple Leafs. The Maple Leafs are poised to be competitive for the Stanley Cup this year, so PROLINE+ couldn’t have been upgraded at a better time.

PROLINE Retail Sportsbook

If bettors want to place their bets in person, they can visit a lottery retailer to do so. First, bettors can go to the PROLINE website to make their picks. Then, bettors can print their tickets off and bring them to a lottery retailer to cash their winnings in. This method allows bettors who are only 18 to participate in sports betting. The Ontario government likely believes that this will ease young bettors into sports betting. Handling physical money may promote more controlled betting habits by the time young bettors are old enough to gamble virtually.

PROLINE also offers one different type of wager than PROLINE+. On PROLINE, bettors can participate in pools where bettors make a series of wagers then earn points for each correct prediction. However, there are a few limits on the number of bets that bettors can make on each retail ticket. So, bettors who are old enough to wager online will likely prefer PROLINE+.

How NHL Betting Odds Are Calculated

NHL odds are based on two factors: oddsmakers’ predictions about game outcomes and a sportsbook’s desired profit margin. Savvy bettors understand that each line has the vig. The vig is a deviation from perfectly fair odds that ensure sportsbooks profit in the long run. For example, odds listed at +150 may have a true value of +175. But the reduced payout of a win on +150 odds instead of +175 odds allows sportsbooks to come out ahead.

Sportsbooks do these calculations over betting lines across all their sports. So, there are enough lines for the math to work out in a sportsbook’s favor.

If bettors want to know how much they could win on a set of odds, there are a few ways to figure it out at a glance. For example, the odds on a Maple Leafs Stanley Cup win are at +1,000. That means if bettors wager $100 on those odds and win, then they’ll win $1,000. When bettors win, they also get their original stakes back. So, if a bettor won a bet with +1,000 odds and a $100 bet, she would get:

  • Her original $100 back
  • $1,000 on top of her $100
  • Receive a $1,100 payout but profit $1,000

The trade-off to high odds is a low probability of winning. Underdogs can come through even if they’re long shots, but those Rocky-esque triumphs are rare. Of course, if bettors lose, then they win nothing and lose their stakes, which is the most common outcome on bets with +1,000 odds. But player injuries and team drama can change odds dramatically. So, even underdogs can’t be discounted entirely. The favorite to win can always have a disaster befall them that’ll be reflected in the odds.

What Kinds Of Bets Bettors Can Be Placed On The Maple Leafs

PROLINE+ offers a few types of wagers on the Toronto Maple Leafs. Most of the bets that bettors will find are moneylines, puck lines, and futures.

Moneylines

Moneyline bets are wagers on who will win a match. For example, PROLINE+ offered a line on the match between the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Maple Leafs were listed at -189, so they were favored to win. The Canadiens were listed at +160, so they were the underdogs. So, bettors who wagered on the Maple Leafs to win had a better chance of winning than bettors who placed their faith in the Canadiens. However, the payout on a Maple Leafs win was smaller than on a Canadiens win. So, bettors would’ve had to decide which trade-off they wanted to make.

Puck Lines

Puck lines are point spreads. They’re wagers on whether a team will win by a certain number of points. For example, here are puck line odds that PROLINE+ offered on the Canadiens and Maple Leafs:

 Puck LineOdds
Montreal Canadiens+1.5-149
Toronto Maple Leafs-1.5+125

In this example, there are two ways to win this bet:

  • Montreal ties or loses by one point.
  • Toronto wins by two or more points.

Puck lines allow bettors to wager on their favorite teams even if their teams aren’t favored to win. A team that’s expected to lose can still please bettors by not losing as badly as sportscasters thought they would. Similarly, a team that’s expected to win can disappoint fans by winning by too small a margin. These dynamics create opportunities for bettors to bet on losing teams and still make winning bets. So, bettors don’t always have to decide between betting with their hearts or betting with their heads.

Futures

Futures bets are one of the riskiest types of bets that bettors can make. Futures are wagers on a season’s championship game. So, bettors who make a futures bet on the Maple Leafs are betting on Toronto to bring the Stanley Cup home. At the time of this writing, Toronto has futures odds of +1,000 on PROLINE+. That means Toronto has about a 9% chance to win the Stanley Cup. However, it’s early in the season, so there’s plenty of time for the Maple Leafs to improve their odds. However, if the Maple Leafs’ odds of winning the Stanley Cup increase, their odds in PROLINE+ will become smaller. So, bettors must decide how confident they are in the Maple Leafs sooner rather than later.

Prop Bets

PROLINE+ offers no prop bets on the NHL. All bettors will find are moneylines, puck lines, and futures. There are a few prop bets available on other sports, like soccer. But the fun bets on in-game occurrences, like which team will score the first goal, are unavailable to PROLINE+ bettors. These types of bets are common in private sportsbooks, but none have been licensed in Ontario yet. However, bettors have the core wagers and leagues available to them. So, most bettor needs are covered.

How To Bet On The Maple Leafs In Ontario

Betting on the Maple Leafs is one of the most straightforward wagers a sports bettor can make. First, bettors must find the PROLINE+ app or website. The website is easy to find on google, and the app is available on the App Store and Google Play Store. Then bettors must complete registration. That involves creating a log-in, setting security questions, and submitting identity verification information. Only bettors with Ontario addresses can complete registration. So, bettors from outside the province would need to acquire an Ontario address to finish creating a PROLINE+ account.

But once that’s done, bettors can make their first deposits. Bettors just have to go to their accounts, select their desired deposit method, and enter the amount they’d like to deposit. From there, bettors can navigate to the NHL lines, find the Maple Leafs line they’d like to bet on and begin betting.

How To Bet On The NHL Championship In Ontario

Betting on the NHL Championship is easier for bettors in Ontario than in many other markets. PROLINE+ has a section dedicated to NHL futures. It’s located below the NHL game lines. So, bettors can easily find the category dedicated to betting on the NHL championship. However, bettors can also place futures bets on:

  • Atlantic Division Outrights
  • Central Division Outrights
  • Metropolitan Division Outrights
  • Pacific Division Outrights
  • Western Conference Outrights
  • Eastern Conference Outrights
  • Player Outrights

While the other categories of futures are self-explanatory, the player outrights may not be. The only player futures are the winners of the Hart Trophy. It’s a futures bet because it’s a wager on the final outcome of an entire season. It’s one of the few player-specific wagers available on PROLINE+

Toronto Maple Leafs Sports Betting FAQ

Does ProLine+ Offer Lines On The Maple Leafs?

Yes. The Maple Leafs are one of the most popular Canadian teams in the most popular sport in Canada. ProLine+ offers game lines and futures on the Maple Leafs. However, prop bets are limited and may not be available on hockey lines.

How Popular Is Betting On The Toronto Maple Leafs?

Very. It’s no surprise that betting on a Toronto sports team is popular in Ontario. But the fanaticism that’s fostered for hockey in Canada takes that popularity to another level. Ontarians will likely find that the Maple Leafs are one of the most popular teams to bet on no matter what sportsbooks are available to bet on them.

Do The Toronto Maple Leafs Have Any Sportsbook Partnerships?

No. The Maple Leafs don’t have any sportsbook partnerships. The NHL has several, including PointsBet. These corporate partnerships are largely for mutual financial gain and creating cross-marketing opportunities. But if private sportsbook operators come to Ontario, bettors may get unique deals on Maple Leafs lines because of these partnerships.

Will DraftKings Launch In Ontario?

If Ontario decides to grant private sportsbooks gaming licenses, then DraftKings will probably be one of the first sportsbooks to snag one. DraftKings has entered the most legal U.S. markets out of all the sportsbook operators competing there. If Ontario becomes fair game, DraftKings will find a way to gain market access.

Will FanDuel Launch In Ontario?

If Ontario starts awarding sports betting licenses to private companies, then FanDuel will probably be an early market entrant. FanDuel is one of the two largest sportsbook companies in the United States. So, it would expand aggressively into Canada if it were given the chance.

Where Can I Bet On Stanley Cup Winners In Ontario?

ProLine and ProLine+ are the only legal sports betting options in Ontario. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation runs both products. So, that narrows down the choices that bettors face when they’re searching for sportsbooks. All bettors have to do is find the NHL futures section of ProLine+ and start betting.
