Prop Betting in Ontario

Canada’s passing of Bill C-218 not only allows for more sportsbook choices for Canadian bettors, but it also opens up wagering possibilities across the Great White North. One of the new betting markets available to Canadians is prop bets. Prop betting has grown in popularity with the expansion of sports gambling in other countries, and that will look to continue in Canada as well.

Here’s everything you need to know about prop betting in Ontario.

What Are Prop Bets?

Prop bets, short for proposition bets, are wagers placed that typically don’t have a direct outcome on the game in question. These can be almost anything other than moneyline, spread, or totals. Not all sportsbooks offer prop bets and the amount and types of prop bets will vary as well. There are two main types of prop bets – game props and player props – with player props being the most popular.

Game Props

Game props are wagers you can place on team-level outcomes. Here are two examples from Ontario’s PROLINE+ sportsbook, which only offers game props.

 OddEven
Total Odd/Even (Match)1.941.80
Total Odd/Even - Memphis (Match)1.871.87
Total Odd/Even - Toronto (Match)1.871.87

In this example from an NBA game between the Toronto Raptors and Memphis Grizzlies, bettors have the option to wager whether the final score will be an even or odd number for the entire game, for only Toronto, and/or only Memphis. These outcomes are unrelated to which team wins, the spread, or the game total.

For hockey, this is one of PROLINE+’s standard game props. Again, the team that wins the most periods doesn’t necessarily have a direct outcome on the game. San Jose could win 2 of 3 but still lose the game if Toronto outscores them in just one of the periods.

Team to Win Most PeriodsRegulation TimeDraw
Toronto Maple Leafs1.97

San Jose Sharks3.103.50

Player Props

For player props, you’re typically wagering on an individual player’s performance. The most popular versions are those in which you’re betting on a player to go over or under a particular stat. Bettors in Ontario will have to wait for other sportsbooks to enter the market to be able to bet on player props since PROLINE+ does not offer them. Below are two screenshots from the BetMGM and DraftKings apps.

In this selection of player props from BetMGM for an NFL game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts, you can see lines for passing yards and receiving yards. All you’re doing is wagering whether a player will get more than (over) or less than (under) their set number. For Tom Brady’s passing yards, you’d be betting over or under 315.5 yards, and the number next to it indicates the odds. Here, you’d have to wager $115 to win $100 for both sides of the bet.

In this screenshot from DraftKings’ app, you can bet on when (first/last) or if (anytime scorer) a certain player scores a goal in the Toronto versus San Jose game. If you were to bet $100 on Auston Matthews to score the first goal and he does, you would win $800 for your $100 wager and the +700 odds.

The Best Prop Betting Sites in Ontario

As mentioned above, prop betting online in Ontario is currently limited due to PROLINE+ only offering game props on their platform. Fear not, Ontarians, as the sportsbooks listed below will all be entering the Canadian betting market soon and will fill the player prop betting market void for you.

DraftKings Ontario Prop Betting

DraftKings is one of the most popular sportsbooks for prop betting because of its expansive offerings and easy-to-use app. One of the unique things about the DraftKings app is the ability to see all of the available props for each sport in one place. You can select a specific league/sport (NHL, NBA, etc) under the “All Sports” tab and you’ll see “PLAYER PROPS” and “GAME PROPS” above all of the games. From there, you can scroll through each prop category for all games currently offered. For other sportsbooks, you can only see the props available for one specific game at a time.

BetMGM Ontario Prop Betting

BetMGM offers similar prop betting markets and competitive betting lines as DraftKings, but where they differentiate themselves is with their promotions. For NFL bets, for example, BetMGM offers risk-free first touchdown bets worth up to $25 in free bets if your selection loses. They also offer single-game parlay insurance on multiple sports and a weekly $10 free bet if your total wagers from the previous week reach $50 or more.

Caesars Ontario Prop Betting

Again, as one of the major players in the sports betting industry, Caesars offers all sorts of prop bets. However, its claim to fame is its extensive menu of prop bets for the Super Bowl. Caesars is considered the creator of exotic bets at the Big Game after being the first to offer a line on “Refrigerator” Perry scoring in Super Bowl 20. Its list of prop bets has continued to grow every year. For last year’s championship between the Rams and the Bengals, Caesars released a prop bet menu that covered 16 pages!

Ontario Prop Betting Odds

Each sport/sporting event will have its own set of prop bets that can be wagered on. For game props, these typically revolve around scores in one way or another. For hockey, this could be the time of the first goal scored. For American football, an example would be “Will both teams score a touchdown in the first half?” All player props revolve around the performance of a single member of a team and are tied to a statistic specific to the sport. The amount and type of prop bets will vary by sportsbook and also by location. In the state of Pennsylvania in the US, for instance, you aren’t allowed to wager on player props for college sports.

What Affects Prop Betting Odds?

The same things that cause line movement in more traditional sports wagers will also determine what happens to the odds for a prop bet. How a team or player is recently performing, the strengths and weaknesses of their opponent(s), and injuries are all factors that influence prop betting odds. Let’s use Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen as an example. If Allen is playing a team with a poor passing defense, his prop totals will be higher for that game than if he were playing a defense that is great against quarterbacks. On the other hand, if his best wide receiver were to miss the game, his prop totals would drop as well.

Can You Place Live Prop Bets In Ontario?

The short answer is it depends on the sportsbook. Some sportsbooks don’t offer live prop betting at all, while some only offer live betting on game props, while some offer both live game prop bets and player prop bets.

Tips For A Successful Prop Betting Strategy

The most important things to consider when placing a prop bet are the opponents’ strengths and weaknesses as well as any injuries to either team. Let’s say the Toronto Maple Leafs are playing the Tampa Bay Lightning and you’re placing a wager on how many goals Auston Matthews will score. If Andrei Vasilevskiy is going to miss the game, you’re going to feel much better about the amount you’re willing to bet or the number of goals to be scored.

The other important factor to consider is shopping for the best odds. As noted above, FanDuel tends to have the friendliest lines when it comes to prop betting but they also wait longer to release their lines to the public. Because of this, you typically won’t get a great value on player prop bets as they will have the most recent information on a particular game.
